The Strike: Andrew's story

We've been asking for YOUR memories of all aspects of the 1984-85 Miners' Strike. This is what Andrew has told us of his experiences...

"I was a miner from Maltby pit. I started there in 1980 straight from school. It was a hard job but the lads I worked with was the best work force you could have behind you. I got married on the 4th February 1984, went on my honeymoon, came back, went back on the night shift, got as far as the entrance to find Union rep there. He gets on the bus to tell me we are on strike, go home it won't last long. So home I went, not to return back to work a full 12 months later. As my wife said, one long honeymoon. We are now having our 25th wedding anniversary soon.

The biggest thing was we just got our own house too, which meant a lot to us but with no money coming in was really hard. Halifax building society was brilliant. They understood what we was going through so no problems. The problems came from gas board and council. They wanted their payments, but we could not pay them so gas board came, took meter out. So I said fine, wait there. I went in house to fetch him a nice gas fire. I said to him you can have this, it's no good to me!

"Thank God for the in-laws. They fetched us anything we wanted so I never went to the soup kitchen."

But the strike was hard. No money, hardly any food. I had two dogs and I can tell you every day of the week they caught rabbit, pheasants, even squirrels, just to eat. We did have food kitchens and food parcels but they was not every week. My dad also worked at Maltby so no good trying to get stuff off him as he was in same boat. All the help we had came from my wife's side. Thank God for the in-laws. They fetched us anything we wanted so I never went to the soup kitchen and left it for the really hard struggling ones that was worse off than me.

I did go flying picketing and, yes, the police were s*ds. They used every tactic they could to stop you and, yes, the army was involved too. I went to Nottingham pit picketing. Most of the times we went to Thoresby pit and heard that a miner had been killed at Ollerton pit so all the lads who was at Thoresby walked all the way to Ollerton that night ready for the day shift going in.

Well, what a sight when we got to the pit entrance. There was about 600 of us and about 2000 other striking miners there. You could not see the entrance to the pit, all you could see in the middle of the miners was a white police van with a lone policeman sat in it scared to death 'cause the van was being rocked from side to side till it got overturned. Every miner there was mad 'cause the lad who got killed was a striking miner.

After Arthur Scargill came to calm us down we all went back to Thoresby pit to carry on picketing there for the day shift. That's where I ended up getting my two ribs broke and a busted nose from some army lads being drafted in to help the police. There was six big coachloads of police. It was a bad day for us. Half of the lads that I went with was arrested or injured.. That was the last time I went flying picketing due to my ribs and nose, so i joined me dad on Maltby picket line right up to the end of the strike.

One thing I will really remember was my wife's mother, God rest her soul. She said to us, if you can get through this without money then you can survive the rest of your married life on anything. She was right. We are still together and have two kids. One has given us two grandkids, the other is now engaged and we are happy. But I still miss the lads."
