Harris on horseback
- 10 Oct 06, 07:33 PM
"I don't know about her politics, but she looks good on a horse." Not the kind of response you hope to get when covering the mid-terms, but that was the answer from one lady I stopped in the street in , Florida.
She was talking about , the Republican candidate made famous when she was in charge of the Florida recount during the 2000 election.
To many Democrats she is the Devil incarnate, but at the time Republicans made her the darling of the GOP. Now as a Republican running for Senate - without the support or encouragement of either the president or the outgoing Florida Governor Jeb Bush - she seems to be out on her own. But that is not likely to discourage a woman like Katherine Harris.
Despite jokes about her make-up, tight sweaters and high staff turn-over she is pushing on. The Sunshine State is never a boring place when it comes to politics and it certainly seems that rings true for these mid-term elections.

I do remember Kathleen Harris every Friday during the Florida recounts. Her inp was very probably biased but as a senator (even a Republican senator)she can only liven up the proceedings in that ossified body

As a Floridian, I'm confident that she won't win. The incumbent Bill Nelson is well liked, and frankly Harris is quite disliked throughout the state. Luckily, we won't have to deal with her antics and "holier-than-thou" politics .

K. Harris' chances of winning in Florida are nil.

Yes, removing the names of over 50,000 black voters from the rolls is just the sort of thing to liven up the Senate.

Harris is considered to be something of a side show as opposed to a serious candidate. The latest Miami Herald - Zogby Poll shows her 27 per centage points behind her Democratic rival, Bill Nelson.
She has consistently been 25-30 per cent behind the Democrat since she announced she was running. The reason the Bush brothers are FLEEING away from her is obvious: she's a loser and in a display of true Republican loyalty, they have turned their backs on her, leaving her to suffer a humiliating defeat alone.

I am going to vote for her because she was abandoned by the traditional country club Republicans who don't have the balls to take any heat on anything.

Bush's Brother Jeb Chased into Closet by Pittsburgh Anti-War Protesters
I suppose Harris could keep an eye out for the nearest subway closet if she leaves FL, but there are some rats even a subway mop closet would reject. Very catchy idea.

Katherine Harris is running against an American Hero, Senator Bill Nelson of the 16th District in Florida. He is a retired Astronaut and long-term senator in good standing with both the Democratic Party that is also supported by many Republicans.
Katherine Harris is a Bush "buy-out" for calling the end to the counting of votes in 2000 and allowing George W. Bush to win the Presidency.
I live in this district and we have had our fair share of problems, which then allows me to state fairly, that we do not need anymore. Katherine Harris is, as the British would say, "a bit off". Her bizarre behavior is conduct unbecoming a normal human being, nonetheless, a United States Senator. Do we need another problematic, divisive person in the U.S. Senate....or in any office in the U.S.? Absolutely not....and if the Bush's (George and Jeb) don't even like or support her, despite her doing their bidding in 2000, then what does that tell you? Let us keep a highly respected, highly intellegent, and highly stable person in office...that is Senator Bill Nelson!!!

People get the government they deserve. If the main qualification to win an election is to look good on a horse, you'll get, well, Katherine Harris. I wish you joy of her when it comes to voting to, say, on invading another country or whether to start World War III. As for looks, whether Harris looks good on a horse depends a great deal on the looks of the horse.

I think Kathleen Harris is a gutsy woman and frankly she earned my respect during the rediculous 2000 scenario.

That was an interesting comment from the lady in Sarasota that said Katherine Harris looked good on a horse, I assume she saw Harris from the front or the side; from the backside, it could have been hard to determine which was the horse and which was the former election broker.
To say (as in the prior comment) that she was probably biased is an understatement and most Floridians (myself included) can't figure out why the Bush's aren't supporting her, they owe her big time for helping to throw the election in 2000; she worked very hard for the Bush campaign before the election and equally hard after the election.

"If you are not electing Christians, tried and true, under public scrutiny and pressure, if you're not electing Christians then in essence you are going to legislate sin." -- Katherine Harris
Or, there's the MZM bribery accusations. Or her prior mention on the campaign website of endorsements by several House members who didn't in reality endorse her. Or the unprecedented turnover in her campaign staff.
Hopefully Floridians will cast their ballots carefully next month.

I absolutely detest this women. I have worked within politics for years now and she is the kind of canadite I least like. She has lots of independent wealth and this is more of a hobby. She is not a passionate caring person but rather on a power trip. She is also a poor women canadite with her obvisous flirting on Fox News and her rumored advacnces on Capital Hill. With more knwow about her horseriding skills than voting record I am saddened that this is the best that the Republican Party could find. Thank goodness that Senator Nelson has such a solid lead.

Most Democrats I know thing of Katherine Harris' campaign for Senate as a huge blessing. She's not the Devil.
She has run one of the worst (and funniest) campaigns in recent memory. She has had a couple of campaign staffs quit on her and then turn to the media with stories of screaming at staffers, ignoring advisers, and various other gossip. She regularly claimed the endorsement of people who hadn't, in fact, endorsed her. She makes off the wall statements, such as the one that separation of church and state is "the lie we are told," that she then has to backpedal on the next day, thus alienating everyone.
The Republicans have avoided her, no newspapers will endorse her, and she has maintained a double digit deficit in the polls. Currently, the only campaign that is going worse for Republicans in this election is Mark Foley's.

I appreciate your factual approach, however, you might have elaborated on her high staff turn over and her promise to infuse $10 million of her own money into her campaign on which she did not make good. Both have made her the butt of many a joke. What is more, her former staffers do not seem hesitant at all to take swipes at her through the media after they have left.

As far as the Media, News Papers, Television, Radio. If you want them to acknowledge your existence, they want the $$$$$$$ for their time and space.
As for the ethics of reporting the full news on Candidates, and Issues, they are unethical. JLB

Bad officials are elected by good people who do not vote and oftentimes by good people who do vote.Kathrine Harris is a prime example of one of the above.

As A US Citizen by Birth, I think that there should be a political opening for Libertarians and Greens. Unfortunately, the people who vote do not read the isues and are attracted by campaign photos of Katherine Harris on a Bikini [I have seen them].
Of course, not everyone is voting in this election because of it. There are others who are even thinking of independence from the USA. Vermont is one of those states. Please see

Is Katherine Harris for real? Who really knows. She is the butt of jokes, no one is endoring her, she appears to be a real flake; seems to have no redeeming qualities or personality. I mean, the press even went so far as to critcize her clothing at one event. Like reporters are such snappy dressers. Will she get elected next month? Probably - you see who got reelected in last presidential election.

While I know she doesn't have very good odds at all, I'm still looking forward to glorious failure in the upcoming elections. She turned my state into a joke, even more so than it might have been already.

I vote, absentee ballot, in Florida. I voted straight Democrat, with one exception: Katherine Harris. Bill Nelson, former astronaut that he is, is still as dull as dishwater. Besides, he usually votes with the Republicans anyway. What pushed me over to K. Harris was Nelson's vote in favor of the Military Commissions bill. Krazy Kate is an embarrassment to the Republicans, & I figure that she can do more harm to the Republicans than Nelson can do good for the Democrats. Strategic voting.

I am from the US and you often have articles about the goings-on here. When people comment, it would be interesting to know where they're from and to see how the different perspectives vary based on location.
Thanks!

Well, she lost credibility on her "administrative" and "political" skills during the 2000 US election. She's lost credibility with the GOP more recently. Me? No matter how good she looks on a horse, I wouldn't trust her to give me proper directions to the loo.

Katherine Harris said that (paraphrased) "if you didn't vote for her, you would be voting for sin and the devil."
This over-mascarad nutbag was instrumental in creating the biggest voting scandal in the US since Huey Long. She arbitrarily eliminated (liberal leaning) black voters from the voting roles and wrongly defined them as felons.
When will self-serving individuals learn that, in the end, cheaters never prosper.
What a shameful legacy she will leave behind.

"I am saddened that this is the best that the Republican Party could find"
They did not have much choice. She was promised a great deal in 2000 and when she announced her intention to collect on those promises and run for senate, the Republicans backed off..
However, she told them we would run anyway. the Republicans then had to support her or risk spliting the vote.

I am a firm supporter of Katherine Harris. I'm sorry that some folks can't see the good here. But it just goes to show what things are coming to. I feel that the reason there is not much support for her is that these so called "good moral Republicans" are simpliy afraid of her strength. No matter who you are, or what side your on, you've got to admit...the lady din'nt back down in 2000, despite all the oposition. Now how many other polotitians world wide can say that. This is someone who will absolutly do what she says shes gonna do. There is no other candidate who you can trust to do that. She cant be bought. Katherine may not win (then she may) but either way, I bet no one will forget her anytime soon.
