Up against the weather

Andrew Steele | 16:00 UK time, Monday, 1 September 2008

Hurricane Gustav, , has cast a thousand-mile shadow all the way to St Paul, Minnesota, where the Republican convention opens/opened in curtailed and subdued session. Organisers are anxious not to be seen having a party while fellow Americans are losing their homes in a deluge. Convention proceedings are being kept to a constitutional minimum until the full extent of Gustav's wrath is known.

A car is washed away as Hurricane Gustav hits the Gulf CoastThe US news networks, which provided round-the-clock coverage of last week's Democratic Party events, have a headache. To ensure a measure of balance they want to give similar prominence to the Republican event, but key correspondents and senior anchors have been redeployed south. Vast swathes of air time are going to catalogue Gustav's progress in minute, and sometimes morbid, detail, squeezing the time available for the events in St Paul. Politicians vie with meteorologists for the best slots.

US news shows adore weather stories - gung-ho reporters, excited, soaking wet and almost impossible to hear in the storm's fury, push themselves to the very edge of what safety and common sense would dictate, to show how bad things are. For some, it's news coverage at its sexiest, it's certainly difficult for a politician making a stump speech to compete.

John McCain helping with the Hurricane Gustav relief effortThe initial Republican response to the challenge has been sober and practical, reflecting the mood in the South. Convention organisers have made Gustav part of the narrative in the Twin Cities - the hurricane is setting the tone for the week. John McCain must be all too aware of Katrina's effect on the Bush presidency - he will not want Gustav to taint his campaign for the White House.

So prepare for a subdued and purposeful week for the Republicans. It's likely the streamers and the balloons suspended in their thousands from the ceiling of the convention venue, designed to add a festive tone to McCain's anointment as presidential nominee, will stay firmly in their nets until the gavel in St Paul comes down for the last time and the delegates have headed home.

    Andrew:
thanks for your blog report...the weather always has a way to up-root any activity....

I feel sorry in a way for both nominees. Also for the present incumbents of both the White House and the Mayoral position in New Orleans. They are have to be seen to be taking action against something that is not within anyones power to control so can only re-act to event. They are dammed if the do nothing and dammed if they do evactuate.

It seems that the weather is overshadowing other activities at the GOP convention that might be worth investigating.

As the police attacks on protesters in Minnesota continue 鈥 see this video (link below) of the police swarming a bus transporting members of Earth Justice, seizing the bus and leaving the group members stranded on the side of the highway 鈥 it appears increasingly clear that it is the Federal Government that is directing this intimidation campaign. Minnesota Public Radio reported yesterday that 鈥渢he searches were led by the Ramsey County Sheriff鈥檚 office. Deputies coordinated searches with the Minneapolis and St. Paul police departments and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.鈥

#3. CNN are covering this in depth. 5000 protested peacefully: 13 were arrested for throwing park benches through windows and smashing up police cars.

Theres a difference between 'protesting' and 'rioting'

Frankly I've seen very little 成人快手 coverage on the Republican convention, especially compared to last weeks Obama-fest and really don't want to see it diluted even further by self styled anarchists smashing up cars.

Replace "US news shows" with the letters "成人快手" and you will be spot on.

How many reporters have you shipped out to stand witlessly in New Orleans whilst a dustbin rolls slowly by and the drizzle dampens their North Face 成人快手-issue anoraks?

Top billing on news time after time? Is it little wonder we haven't seen much of the Republican convention - the 成人快手 sees weather reporting as far sexier and eye-candy for the masses. Is it just me or do I hear the gnashing of teeth in the news studios because the hurricane turned out to be pretty tame? All those disappointed news reporters unable to live on their tales of derring-do in 2008 during Hurricane Gustav. What a shame eh?

More like all those reporters gutted that Bush didn't screw up this time round. They missed a golden opportunity to suggest that Super-Obama could have stopped another Katrina simply by charisma.

Living in Houston, I'll quickly say I appreciated the emphasis the 成人快手 gave Gustav. That was, at the time, the top story, and I don't think anyone who chose to focus on Gustav instead of the convention (including the RNC itself) should be condemned for their choice.

And about the U.S. media's obsession with extreme weather: I think the editors are spot on. There are several--notably on the Weather Channel--who seem almost disappointed that Gustav DIDN'T strike New Orleans. In all honesty, the 成人快手 is really the only news agency that seemed to breathe a sigh of relief after Gustav passed both New Orleans and Houston by without causing catastrophic damage.

And I haven't heard ANY United States media network devote more than ten seconds at the most to the catastrophic flooding in Bihar Province, India--an event UNICEF and others say is rapidly becoming a humanitarian disaster. If not for the 成人快手, I seriously doubt there would be a single major news agency available in the United States even covering Bihar.

I wonder if the high winds would have eclipsed reporting of Obama if they had arrived last week?

On this website, Obama was page one, item one everyday all week.

I still wait to see if McCain will be page one, item one all this week. (Not so far)

I know you all think he is the 'new JFK' self evidently sent to rescue us from the evil Boosh - but as a news organisation couldn't you tell us just a little bit about the other guy every now and then?

Aren't you going to look a bit silly IF the UK public wake up one morning to find someone they have never heard of has been elected president?

On the subject of hurricane coverage, Gustav is no different to other hurricanes, in that the amount of coverage it got increased as it got nearer the US. It devestated Haiti and other countries, but one could be forgiven for concluding that the media in general (including the 成人快手) considers those people to be less significant than the people of New Orleans. It was the same when Katrina hit New Orleans. That area got loads more coverage than the areas it passed through before getting there.

#10 being very, very brutal regular 3rd world suffering isn't news. Its only when it affects us that we care. haiti gets whacked by hurricanes several times each summer- major western cities being flooded is unusual.

How many thousands of kids die ecah day from drinking dirty water? ten 747's worth? Never mentioned on the news but if ONE 747 full of westerners crashes then its a whole different story....

In the media 10,000 dead Africans = 1000 dead chinese = 100 dead French = 1 brit with a dodgy tum. Sad, but true.

#11. With the utmosy respect, I agree with #10, and disagree with you. I don't care about America, (I don't hate them and do sympathise with the New Orleans public) but find the amount of coverage of a storm not hitting New Orleans, a level 1 (not the level 5 we were told would hit) at that. Compare the coverage from New Orleans to the reporting of the storms in the UK. One days vague warning of bad weather.
Rainfall in New Orleans last week = less than acroos the UK. Death toll in New Orleans due to Gustav = zero, death toll in UK =5 so far. Number of houses in New Orleans under water = zero, number in Morpeth = I don't know, the 成人快手s reporting is so vague.
Perhaps the 成人快手 should report events in Britain, rather than speculate on what might, or did not, happen in the USA!

Is there a blog on the latest UK floods?

ISRAEL IS GOING TO LISTEN, WHEN I SPEAK. HERE ME O PEOPLE OF ISRAEL. ISRAEL WILL, BEGIN TO MAKE PEACE WITH THE ARAB WORLD. ISRAEL SHALL, EXTEND AN OLIVE BRANCH TO ALL THE ARAB COUNTRIES. ISRAEL MUST, BECOME THE HUMBLE MEDIATOR FOR THE SAKE OF ALL MANKIND. ISRAEL SHOULD, MAKE PEACE WITH THE PALISTINIAN PEOPLE AND GIVE THEM "RESERVE STATUS" LIKE CANADIAN INDIANS.
