Have Newsnight your way
Gavin Esler used to start his with a quote of the day, but stopped this week as we're trying to make our programme summary shorter and more to the point (tell us what you think). Typically, as soon as you stop doing something, great material comes along.
I loved this quote from Lord Harris, Margaret Thatcher's free market guru, . "The market can cater for the tiniest minorities - those who like fancy waistcosts, or the collected works of Ted Heath".
I assume Lord Harris revelled in the market possibilities of the internet. Once, for example, the extent of your choice was to watch Newsnight or not watch it. Now you can watch it live, on time shift, on the website, , and from this weekend in a variety of new ways.
Our weekly of the best bits of the programme has been doing a brisk business. So next week we'll be offering a daily highlight to download. Let us know what you'd like - films, discussions or shorter clips?
And for those who don't want to download the podcast, you can now watch the collection of the best moments on News 24 over the weekend - it's called The Week on Newsnight.
It's interesting though that however you offer something, some people will always want it served up slightly differently.
One media journalist with a busy social life told me this week that from her point of view the best thing we could do is say at the end of the programme: "And exactly the same edition of Newsnight is starting now on 成人快手 Four".
It's what Lord Harris would have wanted.

Love the quotes and the jokes fit for an 11 yr old. they're what i subscribe for! don't take those away.
I'm one Yank who waits each week for those installments with Gavin's quote of the day. I often forward them to co-workers at Yale University. Please let him keep them up!
Thanks much--
Bob Heister
Keep the quotes! They are a great way to start off the emails and draw you in nicely in case you are thinking of deleting it without reading...
No way - don't abandon the quote of the day.
Keep the humour.
It helps contrast against the serious.
I don't want the daily E Mail any shorter!! As I live abroad, I can't watch the show, but the E Mail highlights things I might be interested in watching online.
If it ain't broken, don't fix it!!
Barbara
I love Gavin's quote of the day and joke fit for an 11 year old. In fact, I often just delete those daily summaries which he doesn't compose. He's the best! Any humor which can be added is a plus, not a detraction. The news is gloomy and cold enough, thank you very much.
Re: making your programme summaries shorter, please don't!
They are an easy length to read, and for an ex-pat living in Canada, a great way of keeping abreast of the issues (rather than just the news) of importance in the UK.
Love the joke fit for an eight-year-old, by the way!
John.
As a Scottish viewer, the best thing you could do for me would be to run the 'full English' version of Newsnight on 成人快手4 or some such. Newsnight Scotland is fine, it carries stuff i want to hear about - sometimes. But too often it's coverage of some deathly dull Holyrood sub-committee which would be better suited to 成人快手 Parliament. Running it concurrently with the end of Newsnight proper means that too often we miss the entertaining bits like the tour of Frankie Howerd's house. The editing between the two programmes is sometimes a bit startling as well.
Thank goodness for the internet and for Sky - which lets you watch any of the regional bbcs.
I actually enjoy Gavin's slightly rambling emails - long may they continue. Is it possible to make entire progammes available as a podcast? Here in central Europe (I am currently in Hungary), the quality of streaming video is very variable and the ability to download would greatly enhance it.
Hi guys & ladies (or gals?),
Yep, great idea about putting newsnight weekly summary on News 24, long may it reign.
What! Esler not doing his quotations bit anymore. I thought something was missing. Come on, get back to being worthy and put back the quotes!
Have a good weekend

No - please don't stop either the quote of the day OR jokes fit for an eleven year old! Both are very entertaining and often get re-used... They'd be sorely missed! Who wants a shorter newsletter anyway? They're well-written, informative and entertaining, so I say keep things as they are. Please?!
why shorten it? You can enjoy the quote, speed read the headlines and larf at the joke.
Plus I send the quote onto friends and business contacts to make me look good!!
I enjoyed Gavin's quotes for the day and find his emails an infornative and entertaing read.
I loved the quote of the day. Please don't get rid of it.
Neil
I liked quote of the day
Thank goodness for Gavin Esler and a bit of levity to sandwich the serious matter between. Let's have the quote back again; after all, exactly how many lines does it save when it's omitted -- 3? 4? Hardly seems worth it. Now, if you could persuade the Continuity Department to drop the endless repetitive adverts for other programmes that are thrown at us before and after every broadcast edition of Newsnight, that WOULD be worth doing!
Shame on you wanting to gag poor Gavin. His Quote of the day and his Joke fit for an 11 year old give his letter some character, even if the joke sometimes makes you squirm. John Lyon
The comment about showing it again on 成人快手4 is a good one. However it would be better if you could show it on 成人快手4 an hour before.
Joking of course, but my point is that when I moved to France, as I am one hour ahead of you, if I watch it here it finishes way past my bedtime.Add to that the fact that the red wine I have for dinner and French TV usually sends me off by about 10pm. So when my wife wakes me at 11.30pm with "Wake up.Newsnight's starting Dear. I'm off to bed" I am not in the most receptive of moods.
I am sure lots of other Europeans feel the same dismay at missing the worlds best news programme...and Jeremy could be tucked up in bed in Henley at a reasonable hour too.
Will the market cater for my minority? If not,the only solution I can see is to make my "Newsnight Siesta" a permanent habit.
Yours sincerely,
John Ette.
Please keep the quote of the day. It always cheers me up. I miss it when the message is not written by Gavin.
Thanks!
"Wot? No quote?"
I found Gavin's wee quotes illuminated the great, the good, the scary, the idiotic, the prescient and the straight forwardly witty people who pop up to darken/lighten our existence.
Get the banners made and the marches organised to preserve this service for us saddos (nearly spelt sados) who savour the Newsnight e-mail.
Bring back Gavin Esler's quote of the day! That and his joke [un]fit for an 11-year-old are the only reason I subscribe to the newsletter; if it entices me into watching Newnight that's just an added bonus...
Please, please, please keep the "Quote of the Day", Newsnight, well Gavin, along with the daily email from the New York Times seem to be the only source of these amusing quips. Gavin's however are usually much funnier!.
Other than that, keep up the great work. Being in California, I look forward each morning to my Newsnight emails.
Oh, and if you could find someway to get Newsnight onto 成人快手 America instead of that Bloody Awful (I emphasise the capitals) Footballer's Wives, I would be most happy :)
Cheers,
Matthew
Although I am a fan of all your presenters, Gavin Esler is definitely my favourite!! I look forward to his informal, human emails & especially his 'Joke fit for an eleven year old.'It would be a shame if the joke & the 'Quote for the day'were abolished because although I watch Newsnight for the excellent serious journalism I think the daily email can afford to be more personal & lighthearted.
Please continue with them
Kay Sutherland
viewer email? think I prefer to be taken by surprise!
Glad you didnt crop the photographers Iraq photos the other day but would you be more daring and show vertical shots uncropped? By the way thought it was a fine and informative report. Gosh Ive actually said something positive.
Quote 'miss it already' unquote.
Please, please ask Gavin to resume his quote of the day. It's so good to have a smile brought to your face nowadays. Brevity, in this case, is not the soul of wit.
Also PLEASE don't stop the joke fit for an eleven year old. Some of them are so truly awful that they are wonderful!
I looked forward to Gavin Esler's pieces bec they bordered on being cheeky and irreverent - and both the quote at the start and the joke for an 11 yr old were always eagerly consumed and repeated to like minded but unlucky people who didn't get the daily Newsnight 'heads up'. Paxo and Kirsty are both worth reading too - but Mr Esler edges it for me.
Please reinstate!
Look, the style of the e mail is boring enough. So, keep the quotes and give us more jokes. In fact, inserting a few of these into the programme might be a good idea.
I immediately noticed the absence of Gavin Esler's "Quote of the Day" and I wondered if it was intentional, hoping that it would return. Peter Barron's comments in tonights "Have Newsnight your way" email dashed my hopes.
The quotes were a small part of the UK which I don't receive too much of working in Switzerland. I looked forward to them, not only for their humour, but for their topicality.
I for one am sorry to see them go.
If the powers-that-be at the 成人快手 decide they're not suitable, it needs to go to a referendum.
I'm not particularly homesick but I do enjoy the British slant on life.
Please reconsider!
Gavin's amusing and informative, at times, comments will be sorely missed. They provided the impetus to view the newsnight site and put humour and fun into often disturbing aftermaths. Like so many examples at the 成人快手 you fail to understand or appreciate what 'turns your audience on'. Will the beeb ever change and wakey-wakey ? We miss Billy C. as well. Restore something of worth and give G.E. his head.

I like the quotes and the jokes that are fit for a ten year old. Anything between those two items I would skip - hence shorter. Now you are dropping the two things I read, well.
I completely agree with the female journalist who asked that Newsnight be broadcast again on 成人快手4 after it is on 成人快手2. Those of us who like to go and drunkenly discuss politics in the pub then would then like to watch real facts on Newsnight when we eat our hastily made munchies food. And who gets back from the pub at 10.30, I ask you?
No more quote of the day? are you mad? is modern societies obsession with do it quicker-faster-shorter going to strip us of the rare chance to read things in a news context that make us laugh like drains? i mean for goodness sakes! it's good for us! I'm sure Gavin's just as miserable as me about this, stop behaving like 24 hour culture despots - if people don't have time to read the funny bit at the top more fool them - but give us a choice!
I looked forward to Gavin Esler's quotes and jokes suitable for a 9 year old, they raised the general tone of news and put the world into perspective. Gavin's contribution will be a great loss to British culture.
I wondered if Gavin could not find any more quotes!
Please continue with these because they were part of Newsnight's topic forecast.
Thanks
HB
Regards to podcast - more features/analysis and less interviews!
To be honest, I do not have a regular source of 成人快手 television, and so cannot watch NewsNight on it, living in the San Francisco bay area, as I do. Thus my only regular contact with the show is via the "viewer emails" that Mr. Esler and the rest of you send out. I enjoy them very much, as they are (or have been), complete with quotes, pithy references and jokes, and would be very sad to have them be diminished in any way. Life is quite streamlined enough without you doing it too...
Re: making your summaries shorter:
I read the 成人快手 OnLine News each day,
to learn what is actually happening
in the world; although it is improving somewhat, honest and comprehensive news has become difficult to access in the US. I find the summaries interesting, though not truly informative. I like the "Jokes"; occasionally send them to friends. I would prefer summaries available online for each topic, rather like 鈥渓oe.org鈥 in the US, but that may not meet your goals. One
thing that is not helpful to those interested in complexity is the increasing penchant to nourish the mind with gum-drops of news and information.
Don't you dare take them away.I'm an EX-Pat Brit living in the US and I use those quotes and jokes to show my American friends and workmates some Brit humour, spelt with a "u".
By the way, how come Paxman doesn't do any of them now? To important for such flipperies?
We need some brightness & humor in the gloom that generally surrounds the news. Here in New York, Gavin's summaries are especially appreciated. Please don't deprive us of the quotes & jokes -- they're real highlights!
Well I feel for the others who write for the newsletter as the general feeling seems to be Gavin's e-mails are the best for their humour, general content, and sense of the sublime. Like many others I forward the jokes and quotes on to others and they are greatly appreciated. Please dont take this away from us....
Please re-instate Gavin's Quote of the Day and keep the Jokes Fit For An Eleven-Year-Old!
Didn't Jeremy use to do a joke at the end of his email too? What happened to that?
Ok, I think that's pretty clear. The quote of the day has been reprieved.
Anyone want the weather?
Peter
Quote of the Day and Joke Fit for An 11 Year old (or 5 Year Old depending on Gavins day) is the only personality I get from Newsnight.
If you kill that you might as well get a monkey to present, no personality.
We like Jezza, but he's got a different personality, more like barb wire. And the ladies, they're efficient.
Gavins like the cheeky brother. At least fat far as Newsnight can go.
Don't impose monochrome Tony Blair emails on us. The personal touches of the writer are what make them enjoyable to read.
By the way, enjoyed Jeremy's interview with Alan Duncan on Wednesday.
We all dote
On the Gavin quote
We stay afloat
For the Gavin quote
Show some emote-
shun not for the quote
Or I'll get me coat
All cut down versions, or selected bits, make one wonder what was omitted. I would prefer, for the watchability, to have whole Newsnights available as downloads, but, failing that, could you have programmes available for streaming for at least a week, with a way one can pass on a url for the specific edition to friends?
If there was some form of indexing of post-broadcast streamed shows then you could perhaps learn from how we view them which sections would be most appreciated as selections.
And, as I've said before, we as a culture need quite a bit of your work retained, available in a permanently available form of good quality as journalism of record. Part of the essential history of issues and public figures. I see that, with little fanfare, you've put up some interviews, but other content deserves as much. And transcripts would sometimes be more than deserved.
Thanks for reinstating Gavin's jokes! I see, people power does work even in 成人快手.
Like others, I like them and send them on - to my daughter and friends in USA.
Either leave Gavin's 'quote for the day' alone or I shall be forced to send my manservant Mimms and his bull-terrier over for a visit. Good grief, you'll be depriving us of the 'jokes fit for an eleven-year-old' before long! It's the only thing that gets me up before tiffin these days. What is the 成人快手 coming to, by gad?
The memsahib nearly cracked the commode when she heard the news! Spare us any more of this 'PC', namby-pamby liberalism... More Gavin, more quotes, more jokes, more eleven year-olds.. Ahemm..
God save the Queen!
Disgruntled from Berks
NO - please don't stop the "Quote for the Day". Just too funny, and a real bright spot of my day... and I'm sure for many other people's too - keep them going.
Massively disappointed the quote has gone - it's a shame to see Newsnight doing something when there was no apparent call for it. Those of us who subscribe, subscribe not only for the brief summary of that evenings programme - we subscribe for that personal, Newsnight touch. Put them back and please stop trying to fix things that aren't broken!
I'm from Miami Florida and I like the 成人快手, Newsnight, and the quotes of the day.
Don't fix anything yet, folks: nothing is broken! It's ok if now and then you simply do not have a quote good enough or a joke bad enough, but otherwise please keep them coming. Other changes? Not unless you get a genuinely brilliant idea! Naturally, I have one: a special slot for any politician who ever really answers a question! I remember when Malcolm Rifkind did that throughout an interview in the US. Clips of it were shown around the World. Most entertaining.
I think that the allegations against Sir McCartney are more serious than the words of President Putin. Your cloak of "hundreds of" responders is a cloak for the veil of editorial bias. I would like you to focus on the fact that many people do not have access to housing, health care, food and the other basic necessities of life and the governments (e.g., British, US and international forces) that thwart or deny them. By doing so, you would better serve the human race. Merci.
I love Gavin's humour. I live in Hawaii and get a kick out of his jokes and quotes. I don't get to watch Newsnight, yet I love the British view and presentation in the emails. Much thanks for the reprieve!
The quotes and jokes fit for a 11 year old are appropriately sandwiched in the Newsnight news content and features. Reading the viewer email without these two complimentary items are totally unacceptable.
i miss the quote! was wondering why the newsletter didn't sound like Gavin. please keep it as it is..maybe a wee bt more chirpier. the newsletter isn't gavin without his quote, jokes and joke for the 11yr olds. and as i can see.. no one would mind it if it was longer too!!
Certainly dump some of the irrelevant rubbish Newsnight covers such as parliamentary politics/party conferences/anything to do with the government(including all so-called, social domocratic opposition), but definitely not Gavin Eslers "quote of the day" and "unfit for an 11 year old" joke.
Sack the damned management I say.
Thank you Peter Baron, we know what we like . . .
You used a quote from Lord Harris today about the market catering for the tiniest minorities.
What pray are then 'waistcosts'.............the collected works of Ted Heath I get - but 'waistcosts'?
I don't expect spelling mistakes from you lot.
Far from scrapping the quote and joke FFA11YO from Gavin's missives, you should be making ALL your Newsnight e-mails carry them. My only concern is that you, Peter, may not have much of a sense of humour....
Why not similucast or repeat Newsnight on 成人快手 News 24?
And for the benefit of international viewers, perhaps there should be a weekly international version of Newsnight on 成人快手 World? Or even a daily edition mixing its own reports and features from the UK edition.
Glad to hear that Gavin will not now be decomissioned.
can we encourage the other to start including their QFTD ?
the emails are great - pity those abroad cannot "have Newsnight your way"
Look forward to the quote and the joke.
Why be brief, anyway? Let yourselves go!
Can i just say that i always enjoy Gavin Esler's quotes at the beginning of the emails that he sends out and also the jokes at the bottom.
It is refreshing shows a glimpse into personalities of the presenters. I also enjoy the odd story that will be retold aswell.
Though i do wish that Jeremy would write his own instead of the Programme Producer, is he just being lazy. And though i have yet to enjoy the pleasure of Newsnight Anytime if you like, it is a very ingenius idea. Next it will be a newsnight night, though can we please extend the programme by 10 mins to an hour and maybe have a proper paper review...
Let's have more Newsnight, not less! For example, Brian Sewell was cut off in his element on Newsnight Review on Friday - surely you can roll the cameras for an extra 15 (30?) minutes and present edited highlights on the show itself, leaving the full discussion for the perusal of the very interested on the website?
Would good to see repeat of Newsnight on other beeb media
- 成人快手3
- 成人快手4
- website
I would be cautious in extending the brand outside it current format & timings.
It's a mighty fine NCA which has stood the test of time, that will not unduly benefit from being diluted and/or franchised out.
The blog & other news/social networking methods via net a good area for growth to ensure this 成人快手2 slot & institution is kept rich, relevant & topical.
Also giving voice to army of viewers, enabling loyalty & allowing viewpoints to be exchanged.
By building your online community, you also have opportunity to poll users, as & when its deemed useful.
Like to see guests who attend continue to add to the discussion/debate/dialogues online to that particular story, because of then time constraints & their after thoughts
That continued story thread albeit in a different media would be interesting.
Also they could also add video commentary, making for a completed/extended report, giving all sides a full say beyond 5-10 mins segment in the programme.
Could be very beneficial for stories which remain in the headlines & provides a beneficial story trail.

Not only should you NOT shorten Gavin's e-mail, is it possible to come up with a "Best of" list of his quotes and Jokes-Fit-for-an-Eleven-year-old?
What ho, Bronski?
"Editors' blogs" or "Editor's blog" - surely not a hybrid?
"Quote" is a verb.
Pip pip.
I enjoy Quote of the day
Keep it.Barbara Norfolk
Keep the quote and the joke for a 11 year old. They're a high point of my day.
Hmm.... is my life that dull?
Rather than News24, could you put Newsnight back on 成人快手 World (TV)? Then we can all watch it.
I've been looking out for Gavin's quotes and as they were missing I thought he had been fired! Bring back the quotes they lighten up my day!
Gavin Esler writes by far the best Newsletter, in fact he should do it every day even when he's not presenting. Please don't edit him down!
I like to receive the newsnight email detailing what will be in the programme that evening, but recently you have started sending two messages a day. The first one generally does not interest me neither does the Friday email from PETER BARRON is there any way to stop these?
I caught sight of a "best of this week's Newsnight" on News24 this last weekend. Is that to be regular, and if so at what times?
Hi Jenny (77),
Thanks for your comment. Last weekend's "The Week on Newsnight" served as a pilot, but it looks very much as though we'll be able to keep this going. I'm afraid a regular broadcast time hasn't yet been confirmed, but watch this space.
Regards,
Stuart
Please keep the present format. It is easy to read and entertaining. Frankly, it is so 成人快手ish. It has personality and an identity. Who on earth wants more American-style hard hitting sound-bites?
