It could be that some of the media has the same contempt for its readers as some of its readers have for some of the media. It could be that they underestimate their readers.
It could be that readers turn to the comics for a laugh at what they already know to be a joke: it does not follow that they are not anxious for serious debate.
It could be that they have no confidence in finding a reliable forum for serious debate. It could be that much of the media is thought to be associated with self-interest.

Our media in the west is censored by threats from advertisers. For decades, serious discussion of freedom for farmers has been vetoed by alcohol pushers, the pharmaceutical thugopoly, the timber industry, not to mention organized-crime interests from all over the world. Even the heralded ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ will probably edit these words to protect themselves from threats... That will not stop me from trying to help feed our hungry planet now and in the future with ideas about freedom and truth.
