Sir Tom Te Tom Tom.

Chris Evans | 11:30 UK time, Wednesday, 4 February 2009

Hey everyone look who we've got on tonight's show...

...Sir Thomas of the Jonesville.

We don't really do guests on Drivetime and we never chase them, but now and again an offer of a guest comes in and when it's of the calibre of the Jonesmeister, well how could we refuse ?

Sure, it means the balls will be thrown up in the air a bit, but nothing wrong with that.

So tonight on Drivetime our first ever TOP TENNUOUS ll, Tom the sequel. Plus - HEY TOM, I REMEMBER YOU, DO YOU REMEMBER ME ? As well as TEN EXTRAORDINARY THINGS THAT HAVE BEEN SAID ABOUT TOM JONES BUT ARE THEY TRUE ?

So, whilst I go and get on with all that, you have a nice day out there now.

CLP.

2009.

I have gone quite palpitationy just thinking about it.

Well there's a guest and a half to have. Do you think he wanted to come on 'coz he was upset that you had banished the "D" spot?

I always remember the cereal advert when I hear Delilah and always incert the line "he's only gone and had his weetabix!" (other cereals are available!) Oh the power of advertising!

Tom Jones Evans? Delilah Evans? only a suggestion if the BIG event happens tonight!

    Hi Chris,

Tom Jones is a legend, just a legend. My sister and I went to see him a year or so ago, and he was fabulous. I don't feel the urge to throw my knickers at him (he could use them as a tent!) but he's still got "it"!

Looking forward to tonight - I will try to get home early!

Dook: you are really are excited - I have never seen you call yourself Quackity (other blog) before!

Aye Chrissie - my feathers get all in a ruffle when ever I think about it - which is most of the time at the moment coz its SNOWING!

#sleigh bells ring ..... are you listening ....on the land SNOW is glistening...#

    I'm there baby I'm there!

  • Comment number 7.

Dook - Cheryl and I are just off for a Phoebe Jog - care to join us???? Too much pent up energy !!

Many moons ago before Tom was v famous he was booked to play at our local dance. Sat in cafe on next table whilst he ate a soggy pie - then we all went off to Cardiff to the college dance - think it was Manfred Mann there !!!! Sorry Tom!!!

    Beesmum xxx

  • Comment number 8.

B-sMum - Whats a phoebe jog? take it has something to do with friends but not sure!

Unfortunately us ducks don't do running especially in the snow although it would make my feathers white again! perhaps a phoebe waddle?

  • Comment number 9.

...anyhoo, many thanks for all your good wishes regarding my poorly back...I completely forgot all about it whilst thinking of the turtley delishus Tom...and there I go again...ow ow ow...

So, Christophe, Tom (Mr. Jones I should say) I remember you, do you remember me?

I was right at the front of the stalls at the RAH (at the aforementioned tribute) and I think you were sandwiched somewhere between Sinead O'Connor and George Michael (there are worse places to be I'm sure) and to be honest, I wasn't expecting half as much as you gave.

If you need an aide memoir, was me drooling and yelping in a rather pathetic manner by the way. 5'7 with spiky white blond hair.

    and should know better frankly

Now don't get me wrong I like Tom Jones, I like his music (always good to sing along to) but for heavens sake go grey gracefully man!! There is no shame, after all it's not as if you are in your 20's.

Sorry, don't want to offend any die hard Tom fans out there, but needed to get that off my chest.

    Afternoon all,

    Goodness gracious me boyo!

Jones the Voice in the studio, we had tickets booked for one of his MGM Grand in Las Vegas shows a few years back, but unfortunately he had to cancel due to a family problem (I think Mum was very ill, and I believe died?????). Mrs DD was very disappointed as she wanted to "Sling her pants" on the stage! I think we went to see the Righteous Brothers instead v. good but not Superstar good.

Please Chris give us a Welsh Voice Choir of Jones and Matthews tonight expecially as Baby It's cold outside!

    DD out

PS C U all at the midlands meet!

  • Comment number 15.

Hi AliB: are you aware that Mr Jones has actually now stopped dyeing his hair, and beard?

I agree with you - it just looked daft, but he has come to his senses and is now letting the grey through!!

Re post #12 - have a look at the showbiz news on the Sky News website.

  • Comment number 17.

    Thank goodness for that Chrissie

I didn't want to diss the man, but I believe that men should go old gracefully and it's us women who should keep the hair dye companies in profit! I speak as one who went grey in her 20's and spends a fortune every couple of months getting my roots done!

  • Comment number 18.

Ali B, I do believe the hair dye factory has gone bust with the recent recession as the latest pictures I've seen of Sir Tom indeed have him with grey hair, lets just hope it stays grey.

    Looks much better.

As for the man himself mmm, he is a national treasure. What's new Pussycat? is my all time fav

Agree re the Thatcher fiasco! It appears that we can no longer voice our thoughts! We have always (and will always continue to) compared people with things to help describe them. She's like a stick insect, he's built like a brick sh*t house, they look like shaggy from scooby do!

The toy in question EXISTED we can't deny it. It's image was used for donkey's years on a certain brand of jam/marmalade. If some one looked like it what is wrong in saying it?

When my dad grew a rather unruly bushy beard we described him as looking like "the wild man of Borneo" (no idea who the orignal one was!) So were we committed an absolute faux pa? No we were creating an image for people to reference.

but hey ho ITS SNOWING and I'm on Holibobs on FRIDAY!!

Ah the scrumptious Sir Tom Tom.

Another on the list of the Man Of My Dreams.

Yes I know his face looksa bit like it's covered in cling fillum, the hair is a tad enhanced but there's summat about him, not the sex-bomb bit but a little twinkle in the eye, that makes me larf. And that works for me.

Mind you, my list of Men Of Said Dreams is very highly dodgy and the GD tells me would get me sectioned without any delay. Fast-tracked. Eg.

The late, great Steve Irwin. (Hang on a bit while I go for a quick sob.)

Ok Pffffffff snort am alright now.

    Danny Baker.

    CLP of course.

    Noel Gallagher.

    Ray Winstone.

    Father Dougal McGuire.

    Bill Bryson.

    Podge.

    Rodge.

And of course my mate Craig from Sheffield. He who is mad as a box of whippets and who claims to be able to accurately pin-pouint a woman's bra size purely by weight. Unfortunately this is a case of unrequited love as he has finally been snapped up by a more courageous and reckless woman than meself.

Anyway. Have just thrown a HUGE tantrum in Sainsbury's so am off to confession without delay before my soul burns in the fires of Hell.

    Catch yous later.

I hope you are all coping with the bad weather. Here it's sunny but very cold. About 6 degrees fahrenheit this morning but it's supposed to warm up to a barmy 20 degrees F...... ooooooo

Sounds like it's going to be a great show tonight.....

  • Comment number 39.

For m'self, I'm delighted that Carol Thatcher has gone...when I heard the news, I thought she'd been booted out because she was blimmin awful...but for using an expression...coo, that's just bonkers.

The ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ should ask the bus driver where to get off instead of making up stops by itself.

That's made me feel a tad better. A wee rant never does any harm.

Back to the matter in hand however. Try as I might, I can't think of any more Tom Jones related malarkey. Except to say, it was him who made me like pussy cats. (Not sure where the Badger quite fits in, but you know what I mean). Bang Bang Maxwell's Silver Hammer also has a lot to answer for. As does The Mighty Quinn. But that's not for here.

    Hi 007:

Well, things are starting to get a little better today ...... but as B-smum said earlier, it's back to fun and games in the wee small hours of tomorrow!

How come the UK grinds to a halt when we have heavy snow, but the US and Canada just carry on regardless?! My brother lived in London, Ontario and they had the most horrendous snow for months on end - never once was a school closed or a bus off the roads!

    C xx

  • Comment number 41.

    Hi ChrissieS,

My perception of this whole thing is the frequency of the large snow falls. Here in the US large snow falls are routine. In ole blighty we just don't get the significant snow often enough to have a fleet of snow ploughs.

  • Comment number 42.

007: of course, you are right. But, hey, a little grit on the roads is not too much ask, one would think!

    C xx

  • Comment number 43.

Agreed, Chrissie. One philosophy some towns have here is not to do anything to the roads until after the snow stops...... Not a smart move in my opinion when you have 6 inches of snow on the ground......

Of course we normally get over 100 inches of snow during the winter season. So far we are already 20 inches ahead of the normal snowfall for this point in the season......

  • Comment number 44.

Ooh and another thing... out in Andorra they have loads n loads of snow but within a few hours of it stopping all the roads are clear again... mind you, you don't want to leave your car parked on the side of the road if the snow plough comes though or it takes ages to dig it out!!

well back from shopping with my sister...she`s bought lots of bits for her,b in law and nephew for their hols tomorrow and i resisted and only bought a new tank top... i was very proud of myself!

Now, Mr Tom Jones... have always been a closet fan and a few years ago a patient of mine mentioned she was going to see him that night at our localish arena...cue me ringing, booking 2 tickets and announcing to then husband we were `off out but i`m not telling you where`. Cue threats of divorce when we reached the arena and well..u can imagine the language. To make it worse we had i think the last 2 tickets and they neednt have paid for someone to operate the spotlight that night,we were so high up and far back we would have gladly done if for something to hold on to. BUT, its in my top 3 concerts ever (and ive been lucky enough to attend 30 plus so far) so the night we had needs no further explanation....`cept to say...Tom JOnes..you were amazing!

Right..off to iron now that i should have done before shopping...boo! But, off out for a walk round local lake later when GM gets home so something different to look forward to..

    Keep smiling...

    Afternoon all!

With the help of a lovely neighbour I have finally managed to dig my car out of the snow. I drove very carefully to the petrol station and filled up with petrol and drove back home with the intention of parking back in the same space again, facing the other way so I could get out easily for work in the morning. And some b*gger has moved his van from round the (very snowy) corner into my lovely cleared space!!!! GRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!

Its gone cold and dark again here - please don't let it snow again, at least until I've managed to get in to work for one day this week!!! I'm going a bit stir crazy now!

Dook - loving the idea of a "tom jones evans" or a 'Delilah Evans' - if baby Evans is born tonight it would almost be rude not to don't you think??

Aw Chezza hope you feel better soon, am pullin' long bacon at you as I speak.

Any road spare a thought for me stood standin' in the bog roll aisle in Sainsbury's with Renee and Joan horns locked in an intellectual debate about the merits of old fashioned scratchy paper versus 3-ply soft stuff emblazoned with a fancy pattern.

After a full 5 minutes of this, Joan insistin' that the 3-ply fleur-de-lys pattern goes further because you Only Use 1 Square; Renee accusin' her of bein' a bog roll Nazi and a snob; Joan demonstratin' how to extract one sheet and do the necessary, followed by Renee doin' the same but more graphically, showin' how easy it is to suffer the trauma of puttin' the finger through said sheet; and finally fallin' out over who had the job of tearin' the Wigan Observer into squares and threadin' 'em onto a piece of string for the outside lavvy.

All this spilled over until they reached the till, then, engrossed in the tale of how the DDF Eric waited with his then small co-horts outside the lavvy for Granddad to go in with his Pigeon Fanciers' Weekly, wait for him to install himself on one of the line of seats within, and then make paper boats which they set fire to and set down upon the drainage channel beneath. Then, upon hearing the shout and the crash of Granddad's skull against the low roof, scarpered.

The flaying of the skin on his buttocks from Grandma's slipper was well worth it, apparently. Anyway, chortlin' away as they were at this happy memory, Joan attempted to pay with her bus pass and Renee dropped a full bottle of gravy browning right beside the till, to the obvious chagrin of the queue of normal shoppers behind us.

Forgive me Father for I am a dirty sinner and have called my mother a most unworthy name in public.

I've just been emailed this fab joke .... well, I think it's hilarious!

The FBI had an opening for an assassin.

After all the background checks, interviews
and testing were done, there were 3 finalists; two men and a woman.

For the final test, the FBI agents took one of the men to a large metal door and handed him a gun.

'We must know that you will follow your
instructions no matter what the circumstances. Inside the room you will find your wife sitting in a chair .. . . kill her!!'

The man said, 'You can't be serious. I could never shoot my wife.'

The agent said, "Then you're not the right man for this job. Take your wife and go home".

The second man was given the same instructions. He took the gun and went into the room. All was quiet for about 5 minutes.

The man came out with tears in his eyes, 'I tried, but I can't kill my wife.' The agent said, 'You don't have what it takes. Take your wife and go home.'

Finally, it was the woman's turn. She was given the same instructions, to kill her husband. She took the gun and went into the room. Shots were heard, one after another. They heard screaming, crashing,
banging on the walls. After a few minutes, all was quiet. The door opened slowly and there stood the woman, wiping the sweat from her brow.

'This gun is loaded with blanks' she said. 'I had to beat him to death with the chair.'

Tinsel, the snow is soo bad in our neck of the woods isn't it?!

Was on a training course til yesterday pm and had no idea it was so bad, only just got up the hilly main road and slid to a halt beside a snowdrift where the car usually sits... 30 mins and 2 lovely neighbours later we'd dug a hole in the snow for me to sliiiiiide the car into, whew! Now can't get the car out again, can't turn it round or reverse out, so am home for the foreseeable...

    Love to all, especially Tash...

Phew. ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ. With much needed gin and tonic at hand.

Lady Boss kindly offered me a lift home.

And I've not been *that* scared in a car for a very very long time.

Rural roads, still icy. For the entire 40 minutes or so, she drove down the windy ickle lanes with her full beam on - even with cars and busses streaming towards us, flashing at her to turn her beam off. Junctions? Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. Just pull straight out.

OMG!! Hopefully getting car back tomorrow - may make some excuse tomorrow afternoon about having to go to the bank or something before catching the bus.

    Yours, veryl nervously!

Am listening to the sounds of hope vs sense: revving engine, skidding of tyres on ice and now the sound of digging... and all this before they even try to get up a short, sharp slope and along my iced-up narrow bit of road - madness!!

Excuse the pre-occupation with the weather, but as CtD well knows, it can be a bit scary.

Off to make a snow angel, because I can n it'll make me laugh in the morning!

    Stay warm one and all

    Evening each

Cheryl: Glad you're feeling a bit better.

Dooks: Try International Starters in Aviemore, food is great. That's where the accident-prone daughter set her napkin on fire last October.

Chrissie: Hope you had your socks over your wellies to get home. More snow this afternoon. Just heard on Scottish news that it was -9 in West Lothian last night, so glad I left my heating on.

Didn't get to hear the show tonight, hope everyone enjoyed The Jones. Was looking after the grandson from Hell but, what do you know, the child was an angel. We went to the local Heritage Centre where he was like a little bambi, falling all over on the ice and snow.

Hallo to everyone else. Am off to text HLS, time she was back on here.

I wanna do snow angels!! I wanna do snow angels!!

sadly, there is not much snow left here. we're due more Thurs/Fri- I'm hoping for late Friday after I've been tatted as I don't fancy driving in it.

    Woos.

    Wimp.

    Hell yes!!!

  • Comment number 92.

Cheryl, I'm a wimp when it comes to driving in snow. Had a horrible skid in snow a couple of years ago and have been terrified ever since. I wish I could get my old Beetle back - it went through snow and ice, delivering everyone home from work, then getting me over the Forth Road Bridge safely.

Much as I love my micra, it's just not the same.

Phot of tattoo on Friday please - well, maybe not - when it's healed would be good.

Oh Man, 314 emails since last Thursday.

I do this at rare intervals. I go away and ignore everything, and then am astounded when I get back. Technology plays such a huge part of our lives, so, at times, I just.......switch off.

No offence meant folks that tried me. As it happens, I suffered a 'broken' mobile phone sim card that didn't help. All fixed those that are in touch.

Head colds? What is that all about? I'd rather have the flu. You get it, you are very poorly, you recover. It's all there. You live. This head cold/virus thing is naughty.

I was so ill on Saturday, I almost blew out the Superbowl plans. For me that is like a blown race tyre at 190mph. I'd never wish it on anybody.

I even went to bed at 2pm, Sunday afternoon, for 4 hours. Not felt that ill for years. I survived, went to the Superbowl party and was still there at 4am. I had a breaking of the pain.

The bar bill was simply.........disgraceful. I won't say it here. Not my blog, not my place. However, the bank manager was feeling sweaty himself on Tuesday. I'll say no more.

For all those doing Facebook, and have sent me stuff, be patient. I'll get to it tomorrow. I'm a nightmare I am. Biker folk will know there is a test in Malaysia for the MotoGP this week. Bare with me.

Kirk, Cheryl, and many others.......I will reply, talk to you, 'do' faceache, catch up, as soon as my brain re-enters the atmosphere. I will, really.

And, again, Tash, will you have this baby for gawds sake woman?

Our man did a cracking job with Sir Tom tonight. Has Chris ever sounded so good? I don't think so.

    Right, where's my head at?

Cheryl. Glad you're on the up. Not like you to be in the dumps.

Musta bin that white-knuckle ride with Penelope Pitstop that did it.

Puts me in mind of the GD when she was learning to drive. As a good old farmer's daughter, used to jumping on forklifts, ridin' round on anything with wheels etc., I thought she'd take to driving like a duck to water. How wrong I was. She was to driving what Iceland currently is to the banking industry; her father point blank refused to take her out on the open roads. Mind you, this is the heroic hunk that could flatten an All-Black, break a barge-pole tryin' to dislodge a beached barge and carry an iron lamp-post under one arm, to the embarrassment of the neighbour who'd asked him to bring the tractor round to move it up his drive. But get 'im on a roundabout in a kids' playground and he'd be throwin' up for 2 days. Ergo, navigatin' roundabouts and hairpin bends with Daisy Duke held no appeal for him.

There is, somewhere in Wigan, a young man who will be scarred for life rememberin' bein' chased up an embankment followin' his football, by a crazed bird in a red Golf with her older blonde co-pilot screamin' an' reachin' for the ejector seat. There will also be a chap who will be titterin' to this day at the sight of the same two eejitesses flyin' straight over a mini-roundabout and doin' a full wheelie before grindin' to a halt, the co-pilot jumpin' out and beltin' the driver repeatedly round the head with the TV Times whilst impersonatin' Siouxie Sioux.

Bless her. A pillar of the community now, like. And the worst back seat driver known to woman.
