It's figures day gang...

... it's like getting your school report.

Every three months we get our audience figures, very detailed figures, quarter on quarter, year on year. And this time, whoopee, we are rocking !

So thank you lovely listeners of the Radio 2 ship, we thank you for sailing with us and please let us know if there is anything we can do to make your voyage even more enjoyable.

The thing is, when the figures go up, there is not enough joy, as we are all just so relieved. Ha ha, hilarious. Be ready for the worst and hope for the best, that way you're guaranteed to drive yourself mad.

Terry's flying, we're flying, don't know the other shows figures yet but they'll be around I'm sure.

Baby due date, officially ten hours fifty five minutes in. All quiet on the western front and we're going out for a Chinese tonight. Spicy me thinks.

Peace and love dudes.

...then just as I'm about to write my missive, my boss came and stood next to me...this never happens, and is entirely unprecedented as he only sits about half a yard away, so most of our conversing is done from a seated position...

    Anyhoo, WELL DONE CHRISTOPHE!!!

...and of course, well done Lord Wogan...

Please see previous blog re my emotional state regarding the non-playing of the theme from Six Feet Under last eve...of all the things you could have done Christophe, this would have made my voyage more enjoyable...as it was the housework still got done...hoorah.

    Hi

Long time lurker here and great fan of Chris and this blog. I live near two of Chris's pubs and have met him several times and he really is just as it says on the packet!! Congratulations CLP on the figures - you really do make so many people happy.

I've finally taken the plunge because you lot seem to give out such good advice and support to each other and I wondered if anyone had been in the position of not being allowed to see their children?

My son is going through this now - his ex partner won't let him see his baby daughter and wants to cut us out completely - any suggestions what we can do?

Ooooh Nasty one that Mizz Darcey! Mr Egg had a few issues with stepsons Mum in the early years culminating in solicitors letters - however persevered along with grandparents (on both sides) intervention and now everything is hunky dorey and actually when she gets fed up of him and his teenage ways she sends him to us to sort out. Good relationship with her now.

This was way before my time - however I my suggestion is that if you know her parents talk to them and try and organise a meeting between son and ex with grandparents in attendance (nothing like being told off by your mum and dad to keep things civil and common sense prevailing!)

  • Comment number 25.

Hello MizzDarcey - welcome to planet insanity!

I can only imagine what your family must be going through, but having no kids myself, can't proffer any words of wisdom or advice - but I'm sure of the others on here will.

  • Comment number 26.

    MizzDarcey,
Very difficult to comment without knowing the reason why this situation exists.
Having said that, dookeggs suggestion of going through her parents may help the healing process (assuming the damage can be fixed).
My only word of caution would be that your son needs to be the architect of this. If you interfere too much directly, you could make the situation worse.

  • Comment number 27.

just found this with ref to an earlier comment

Another track that smacks of "novelty"... Gavin & Stacey actors Ruth Jones and Rob Brydon have been tempted to release Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton's Islands In The Stream, which their characters Nessa and Uncle Bryn sing on the hit comedy show. Apparently there's a group on Facebook pushing for it. Haven't people got anything better to do with their time?

  • Comment number 28.

wonder if same sort of comment was made about CLP bloggers Tel/Aled campaign?

  • Comment number 29.

    MizzDarcey - welcome.

Some friends of mine had a similar problem when the woman just moved away to another part of the UK with all her kids - some by another man. In their case their son got a new girlfriend and decided to give up after a short while (which we've never understood) and I don't think could do anything more. Now they never talk about it - presumably it is too painful.

I'd agree that if possible using dook's approach would be a better first step than using legal routes - they should be a later, or last resort.

I'm in danger of going into a long rant about selfish some people who use their kids as pawns - so will stop there. The best of luck to you.

Yes its an awkward one this - I've spoken to my grandaughter's mum and suggested a meeting with me there as well to try to calm things but she doesn't want to know. She's got a new partner and has gone to see a solicitor about stopping my son from seeing the baby now or in the future.

Congratulations Chris and Drivetime team on your "school" report figures.

An excellent show, well executed, good teamwork that shows and top music thrown in. Makes my drive home all the more enjoyable.

To MizDarcy - sorry that your son as to go through this. If his name is on the birth certificate he does have legal rights. My cousin has recently split from her partner - he wants to see his son often and she has moved away - but because his name is on the birth cert she is scared that he could get the law on his side and she will just let him have access. I think Dook's way is a really good idea but if the partner just doesn't want to know or even the parents can't help there's only the law courts left. Suggest son gets advice on situation so that he is armed with all he needs to know and how to play it going forwards.

MizzDarcey - Netmums is great advice from AS66. This was a tremendous help to my friend who's son went through similar problems getting to see his daughter. It was a long difficult process mainly because of his ex partner just being downright nasty but it did work out well in the end and he gets to see her for the weekend every other week!

  • Comment number 53.

mizz darcy - welcome! as a newby myself i think you will enjoy the experience!

if your son's ex has seen a solicitor then i think he should too if only for information. he doesn't actually have to instruct them to do anything, sometimes it can just be helpful to talk it over and find out what your "rights" are from one who knows! look at a solicitor who is part of "Resolution" - used to be Solicitors FamilyLawAssoc - they are supposed to promote a conciliatory way of doing things.
also there is mediation - where they go to a meeting together and a trained mediator lets them talk together but does not allow it to end up in a row. this would be before court (and in my view should be before too much between solicitors).

if it goes to court it is likely the court will insist on some court-based mediation too.

if he hasn't done anything wrong then i should think a court will be sympathetic to his situation.

mind you that doesn't force her to be helpful ... personality transplants are tricky things!! (that wasn't meant to be unfeeling!)

sorry have gone on rather longer than i meant but hope it helps!

    Hi all,
I became an Auntie this morning, my brother phoned to say that his partner had a baby boy, Jadon Richard (Jr) weighing in at 9lbs.

Unsure when I'll get to see my nephew, as they live in Northern Ireland and my mother has practically disowned my brother because of his partner, oooh I won't even start explaining that. I just don't get involved in family squabbles, its a total waste of time.

Best of luck for the impending birth. Can remember during my pregnancies I was told to avoid using Lavender oil as it was known to bring on labour according to my midwife. So it might be an idea to get the massage oils out.

Congrats Tifflette - I'm sure you're right to keep out of the squabbles - my family have had more than their share of those - and if you can afford to send a present for the baby that might be helpful in building bridges.

Dook - re #69 I'm afraid I can turn that on its head! I was (supposedly) 3 weeks late - although this was the early 60's and pre-scans so Mum might just have got her dates a bit wrong - but am a lark rather than an owl and totally paranoid about time-keeping. I really hate being late for anything!

But my daughter was born very prematurely and now is a night owl who only gets anywhere on time (like school) when she's nagged by me!

Drinking - I was brought up in a tea total household. I've never been drunk or felt the need to drink to excess. I like a glass of wine every now and again, Pimms in the Summer and Bailey's in the Winter. Agressive drunk people scare me and happy drunk people make me laugh. As in the words of the famous Pet Shop Boys, most of my friends "only tell me they love me when they're drunk!!"

Chris, I was two weeks late having LM so you may have a little wait yet :-)

Been out all day so looking forward to catching up on your posts soon.

Found out that counsellor is retiring earlier. Now how about that for timing eh?

    Back in a bit.

With a cup of tea hopefully. Camomile!

I know I'm a bit late, but delighted for Mr Evans re: figures for the show. As I said the other day, R2 is a terrific station - who wants to go anywhere else?!

Wonderful to see Mary and AS66 on the blog - my two wonderful friends I met thanks to Chris Evans!

I can confirm that Mary is looking absolutely terrific - indeed, she is my inspiration for not having had a single crisp for 11 days!

Tiggs: I must have missed Mary's ARF request - can't find it mentioned!

From yesterday: can I just say to Hazel and the fact that she was an Egyptian handmaiden in another life. You know something? I do believe that, even though I said quite the opposite!

Tobes: I really did laugh at you saying that with your luck, you would come back as yourself! You and me both, mate!

And Bingo: I think B-sMum said this to you: not all women want a "bad guy". Personally, I'm a scaredy-cat and I would never have been attracted to some guy who was going to cause me trouble. Most women want a "good guy" - someone who will look after them - Take out the rubbish. Buy an occasional bottle of wine. Be completely understanding when you are still going to see Westlife when you are past 50. Trust me, she is out there - stop looking for her, and she will find you!

MizzDarcey: welcome - you have come to the right place!

Just to say: I had a half-day off yesterday and went to see the Frost/Nixon movie - an absolute cracker, though I would imagine that the majority of you on here haven't a clue what Watergate is/was! I was merely a child myself at the time .....

    C xx
