WHAT鈥橲 THE MOST EXCITING THING THAT CAN HAPPEN TO A PERSON ?

Chris Evans | 07:04 UK time, Thursday, 28 September 2006

When do we get excited ? Does excitement get less as we get older ? Have you noticed we are only usually excited about future events.

When you鈥檙e a kid, you have plenty of time to wait, plenty of time to think about what ever it might be you鈥檙e looking forward to. So much time that when the big day arrives, you have already lived it a hundred times. You have used your imagination to be there, to feel and smell and see.

I remember staring in toy shop windows and just the pictures on the boxes of toys I wanted was enough to give me butterflies鈥

鈥ow, what makes me excited?

Well first off the first thing that gave me the same tingly feeling as the toy shop window was girls at around the age of fourteen. The same can鈥檛 get to sleep at night obsessive focus, the same 鈥渨ill I ever really get that?鈥

Next, I think it was getting some form of transport, a motorbike in my case, a 50 cc Yamaha f.s.e.

Next it was sex with girls.

A full on relationship.

Owning my first car.

Getting a job at a radio station.

Owning my own place.

Moving to London.

Getting a job on the telly.

Buying a Ferrari.

Making my first million

Buying a big house.

Getting the Radio 1 breakfast show.

Buying Virgin Radio.

Selling Virgin Radio.

Meeting Ms. P.

Digging the garden, cooking, reading and writing.

Getting wed.

Going to live in the States.

Designing and building a house.

Furnishing the house.

A few months later, I was hit with a huge fine/court order. I had to sell a lot of things to raise the money to pay. One of the things that went was the house I built. It was the size of a castle. I ended up moving into a small cottage in the grounds of the original seventeen bedroom mansion, a two bed roomed cutie with a small garden. This is where I still live. I love it.

Whilst living there Bill and I took time out to look for a house in town (London). We found one, the best house I鈥檇 seen in a while. We bought it on the spot but by the time we had completed the sale Bill and I were no longer together.

I since sold the house and bought a one bed flat just down the road.

Whilst all this was going on, I don鈥檛 recall being excited a single time.

Then I got my job at Radio 2. Excited again !

Brain started working again, the ideas were back.

But my goodness me, what a twenty year detour that was - just to realise you still loved what you鈥檇 set out to do in the first place.

Last night I was excited about having a night in watching telly. Then I realised there was sod all on, so I got excited about reading a book. As I read my book, I began to fall asleep, I looked at the clock, it was 9.15 !

鈥淚鈥檓 off to bed,鈥 I thought, 鈥淚鈥檓 obviously tired enough.鈥 And I got excited about that too.

A quick stab at the crossword until it fell out of my hands, a kiss goodnight for the big German boy and that was me till about half an hour ago, it鈥檚 now seven o鈥檆lock.

I was excited about my green tea and honey, I then had a frisson of excitement about what I was going to write and I literally can鈥檛 wait for the rest of the day鈥.

I really must to get on.

3.11 pm update. Just finished writing for tonight's show, it's gonna be a belter. Got a lttle girl on who's cleverer than most of us put together and nice with it apparently. We're also gonna be tasting herrings.

Anyway that's not why I felt the urge to annotate.

I've just been reading your posts and am amazed how you pick up a topic and run with it. Yesterday's bed territory stories, were like a top ten episode of Seinfeld. Today you're rocking with excitement. It's infectious, especially Tina and her mates going crazy at the chef's table. Love it, really love it. You're making me more excited than I already was.

For once I'm half an hour ahead of schedule. A rare occurance and I have no idea how it came to be. This means a longer walk for Enzo and more time for me to think about tonight.

Myself and two pals are heading off to one of the finest restau's a Londres and we cannot wait, boys only, full bellys and no doubt far too much needless cheese and head thumping armagnac. Whoopee !

I don't understand people who complain of being bored. Being busy doing nothing can sometimes be just what we need.

On a slightly different note, there's a line in Thirteen Days - a superb film - in which President Kennedy describes that moment immediately after waking when we are all neutral. There is a split second in which we are not aware of our surroundings and we have not recalled what it is that the day holds. Then, he says, he remembers he's the President. Now at the time, he was in the middle of the Cuban Missile Crisis but he was saying how everyday excited him anyway. We can all make something of everyday; as my Dad says, "Everyday starts a good day". Something positive can be gleaned from whatever situation we find ourselves in.

Of course, not having any excitement can be stifling and crushing. Sometimes we have to go and find it. I was unemployed for 6 months but finding a new job and using my time was higely rewarding.

    Have an exciting day bloggers!

You are very lucky to have found your way back - a lot of people begin a new job with excitement and new ideas and end up ploughing their own furrow for 40 years! But I don't want to be depressing, I must say I look forward (with some excitement) to your mid week blogs because they are there to start my day and give me a boost, keep up the great work both on this and the show.

One minor criticism though - why did you have to choose such an unhappy song for the Friday starter - a song about how a man discovered his wife/lover was doing the dirty on hime - yes the tune is upbeat but the lyrics just bring me down. Can you consider something different PLEASE!

    Good morning,

I think a lot of people suffer with that now. Everyone has something to get excited about - be it small or big - it doesn't really matter. But I think people concentrate too much on the things that won't get them excited; that item they worry about then masks all excitement to everything and people get dragged down into mundane negative thoughts.

Well done Chris; maybe your post this morning will make people sit up and realise that they should get excited about something...and realise what they are missing, once they feel it inside once more maybe they'll make a note to concentrate on the things that make them feel good and alive.

It's Thursday, we must crack on; everyone has something to look forward to, concentrate on it. It may not seem like it at the moment; but at some point something good will happen.

    Awwww bless!!!

The reason we don't get as excited about things as we get older is because we can see the problems that surround the things that used to excite us as kids. At 10 years old you can get excited about Christmas - at 28 years old I can't, because I worry about the cost etc.

I'm not even excited about my new house, because there is the worry about selling the old one, having to furnish etc the new one, and then there is the ongoing worry that we can't afford the new one.

Infact - thinking about it - I don't get excited about anything anymore. Somebody please help me get my excitement back........

Being able to walk in the streets (within reason) and window shop - and actually see goods in the windows....

Actual seasons where you can actually see the changes....

Oh - so many things - I guess most of all LIFE....

Have a wonderful day everyone - life is good. Bad experiences are hard to cope with, but are just learning curves - hang in and smile - things DO get better.

I must be the most excitable person, it's not that I'm highly strung or anything I just gleam pleasure from the littlest things - Take today for example, a normal working day, but no - yesterday I arranged to go to a tea dance to do some promo about an event, how exciting. What if an older man (I'm not 30 yet) asks me to dance, do I dance with him? Oh I'm very excited (almost to the point of annoyaing other people!).

You're lucky to find yourself back in a job you love Chris, many people never get that opportunity - but I guess you have to make changes yourself and do the best you can.

Going back to excitement, I'm pleased your blog is encouraging people to look a different way at the world - we should all be able to look at the day / world with the wide eyed wonder of a child and be excited about the smallest things, it completely changes your outlook on life - I know, I do it and it's not even Friday!

Yet another reason why we should all stop and smell the roses!

Lyn @ 5 - I get excited by tubes and stuff too, it's what comes form not living in London. I always like to go and see the queen when I go to London - that makes me excited.

only 87 days till Christmas - How exciting!

I find excitement in the most silliest of things - but boy am I glad that I do. This ability to find excitement easily, has paid off well as earlier this week I was told that I am going to be made redundant. Sure, I was biting chunks out of the furniture for half a day at the unfairness of it all, but then I just felt so excited and terrified in equal measures about what the future might bring - so I'm just clinging on to my rollercoaster car and enjoying the ride. Sure finances are a background worry but I have an innate sense that things will be okay, because they always are.

Does any ever get that thing where you KNOW you had something nice to look forward to or lined up to do, but you cant remember what? You get an ickle tiny feeling that something good was waiting for you... but can you blinkin remember it? can you *?@拢!...

...and then it hits you and you feel ever so slightly silly: You had a small bar of chocolate in the fridge... you had that parcel from Amazon to open... your magazine had arrived... something so small and insignificant... but making you feel excited none the less.

My excitement levels are quite high these days planning my wedding... where to start eh? "Oooh! we could have this!!" "Ooooh, what about that!"

Excitement needn't stop... my grandparents are 89 and 86, they still get excited about life, about the fact they are still in love after 65 MILLION years, about the fact its a thursday which means its curry for dinner, about the fact that the fire "really churns out the heat"... about the fact they have each other.

They still hold hands in bed.
He still jokes "oooh, I'm on a promise tonight!"... at least I hope its a joke...

The most I can ever remember being excited as a child was when my grandma and grandad got back from a 2 wk holiday in spain. My gran who is still with us at the ripe old age of 98 says she can still remember my little face light up when I saw them, this was 30 years ago! 2 weeks is a long time when you're 3.
As an adult it was when my then boyfriend (now hubbie) decided to take me to Venice (in my top 3 to visit places)
I was so excited I started the count down at 71 days! I drove my workmates nuts. In fact I was so excited I compleatly missed the fact he had been shopping alone a couple of times before we went, I completely missed what the little man at the airport had found in his hand luggage when they checked, AND I completely missed the small box he'd been carrying around everywhere for the 2 days we where there before he popped the question on a gondala!
None of this sank in for at least 6 hrs til we where stood in St Marks square after a lovely meal and I burst out crying at how good the boy had done!

I consider my self quite level headed and not that excitable, (I was so laid back the night before my wedding my friends who stayed over with me asked if I'd taken anything for my nerves, which I hadn't, and I replied "Whats to be worried about?"), however I have been know to let out a couple of whoops and do a couple of laps of the office if I've closed a deal or one of my customers call to say thank you for my help or they have recieved some really good service. It's more I take joy in the fact I made someone else happy.
If I recieve good service or I know someone has pulled something out of the bag for me. I make a point of calling them (not e-mailing them) to say thank you, I sometimes send small chocolate bars or good boy lollypops. We are always fast to complain but never seem to praise.
I hope this at least raises a smile, if not gives them that little buzz we all look for throughout the day.

I love today's! I mean I love today's blog, but also I realise in the literal sense I love the today's of life!! There's just so much to be excited about. Even though I'm going through the most stressful bleak time of my life I find myself excited about so many tiny and big things.

Currently I'm most excited about a friend starting over his life in a new country after talking about it with him for the past 6 months. Its not even my adventure but I'm excited!

As for me, knowing that today is yet unlived and therefore holds any number of special and unexperienced things including the very moments that could turn my life upside down, flipped right side up or parachute it to a whole new level!

See, you have to allow room for excitement or they'll simply pass you by, and then you'll not have lived today as if it counted. Which of course, it does.

Its a gift, -that's why its called the present!

    Hi Chris and the blogettes,

    Mmmmmmwah!

    What a fab subject.... Excitement!!!!

Remember the summer holidays when you were at Junior school ... how exciting was that last journey home, after the last day at school? 6 weeks off was like a lifetime! We would get excited about that because in the terms of our young lives, it was a significant chunk and it was filled with all sorts of things to get excited about. Things like, building a house out of bails of straw/hay in the fields.

The young mind is like a sponge, it accepts things as fact, believes them and genuinely gets excited by them because everything is new and different;. that is how the young mind works, it doesn't know any better. It's not experienced enough to be cynical.

As we get older, we start to compare what we are going to do or are being told, with something that we've experienced in the past. The adult mind never just accepts things like we used to when we were young, that is why excitement is so difficult to come by for lots of people. How many times have you been organising the Office Christmas Party and some killjoy will say ... what's the point? It'll be the same as last year, how do you know? Be the one that makes it different!

Never give up learning something new and never ask anyone who has done it before. What's it like? Go find out yourself: that is what makes it exciting. If you're going on holiday to somewhere that you've never been, don't compare it with other places you have been.

I recently ( 18 months ago now) went to Rome for the first time.... I was soooooo excited. I learned so much. Yep; I went to all the usual places and they were great but... went off the beaten track, all on my own and found far more interesting things than the fantastic buildings had to offer- I went to the parts... they don't want "the tourist" to see, met some local folk .. got in a bit of a sticky situation but was rescued by a guy ( Fabrizio: he didn't speak English) who became my guide and mentor for the remaining days of my holiday. We communicated by me pointing at words in my little phrase book... he arrived at my hotel each morning after we met , accompanied me everywhere ... when I wanted to go in somewhere he would march me to the front of the queue say lots of stuff in Italian to the staff and in we went .. no charge .. no tickets..... no problems .....( I wondered if he was in the Maffia)..he sorted out a problem I had with the hotel, they treated me like a Queen after that, and took me to the airport when I left ....... what a great guy......That was exciting! I'll never be scared to go it alone again.

What am I excited about this week. .. Well I'm away on holiday next week. Hey no cheering! I have some new faith boots ( killer heels) arriving today....and I'm stopping in at a farm shop tonight on my way home, to pick up some free range eggs.

The most exciting thing I've ever done was to pack a small bag and get on a train to a new life.

    Keep smiling

But if & when we do use them again then we get back to the things we love and become more & more happy & excited - as you have found!
So - among many exciting things TO ME - I read a lot - always listen to great music every day- discovering travel (Just been to China) - and trying to help people around me - all these help fulfil me - filling up my happy & contentment tanks!

I'm excited thinking about how a spider climbed up my dressing gown this morning and I had to jump around the bedroom throwing off the contaminated garment whilst my husband laughed heartily at me... I'm excited about him taking the micky out of me every morning for the next week about that.

My new addiction... steam engines... I got so excited at the weekend about a steam engine moving I cried. Now that's excitement. This weekend we'll visit the railway museum in york (I'll probably cry more) and the weekend after we'll ride on the North York Moors railway - I will certainly cry at those engines. I love being excited. I love brightening up people's day. It's what makes me tick, and I hope my being the way I am encourages more people around me to look at all they have to be excited about, as life is much more interesting if you look at it through 'excited eyes'.

I'm 30 next year - I can't wait. All my same age friends keep telling me they're dreading the big 3 0. WHY? Another year older, another year wiser, another year of meeting lots of new people and having new experiences... bring it on!

One of the six year old, whoose name was Cecilia did not seem to be able to grasp it. Even when we turned the rope she seemed to get tangled up. Then one monday she came in with a bit of old rope and showed us that she could do one or two turns. By the time I left she could skip as well as most of the others. I got excited not just by the fact Cecilia had learnt by the fact she had learnt to skip but by the joy the children seemed to get from us being there. Leaving was one of the hardest thing I had to do, it was only made easier by knowing the Sheela was waiting for me back home.

hi Chris + the Blogger Bunch!

I think to keep life simple is the easiest way to excitement & happiness.
Find out what things do excite YOU alone - and just try to keep as many of them in your day as possible.

When you are a kid life is black & white.....just as you age we are pushed into these "shades of grey" that make us lose our focus.

We have to spend more & more of our time doing things & seeing people that we put up with - rather than feel passionate about!
So then we must always have some ways & time to do the "me-thing" - so never feel bad if sometimes youre a little selfish...else the rest of the world will claim your time and the "me-time" has disappeared.

You get excited again I think because you are back to what you do the best....entertaining people in your amazing & creative way - so welcome back!!

So get to know what "rocks your world" - then do those things as much as possible - and do all you do with passion!!

Now Im off to practice me salsa dancing steps with that Ricky Martin bloke singing away!!

    HEAVEN!! x x x

myself and 5 friends (who all love our food and wine) booked the chefs table at Petrus. It was the most exciting, interesting, beautiful, amazing, spine tingling thing I have ever done. It may seem a silly thing to get so excited over but, for me, it was the best day I've ever had.

For 5 hours we sat and watched Marcus Wearing and his amazing team cook the most amazing food - I never new this sort of thing was out there! I've led a sheltered life and am still floating on the ceiling and grinning from ear to ear!!

The excitment I felt on the build up to the day, then on the day itself and still now has given me a new lease of life!

    Good afternoon Bloggers!

Excitement eh! I have been thinking about this and the Blogmisters list of things that have excited him over the years. Interesting that so many of them are martial things such as houses, cars, girls, money and his businesses. Is this a shallow man or do I have it all wrong?

I preferred the Blogmister that gets excited over trees and when he talks of the pleasure he gets from entertaining another person like having a meal with good company and is excited about doing things for and with others and not all about what you can get out of it. So for the first time I feel a little disappointed about the blog today :-( It has made me think so I guess it has served its purpose.

For example Chris uses the example of girls, if I get too excited with my wife she complains as my excitement does not last as long as she would like!

A new car (I have had a few, not a Ferrari :-( ) is that really excitement or merely a great expectation that it will be good to drive and reliable?

How many of us get the chance to own or run a business and is that as exciting for most people when so many businesses go under so may be what he was feeling was lucky?

Money I have some but not a million so do I have enough or get excited about and if I did would that excite me, I do not think so.

Of course I get excited I just do not find material thing exciting. I have a nice house, good job, lovely wife and great kids and I think I am lucky. I get excited when I see the dogs jumping around knowing we are going to go for a walk. I get excited every morning when I wake up and feel excited to open the curtains and see what the good old English weather is up to. I get excited when I open the computer to read this blog (sad I know).

Maybe I have missed the point today or I am old but I do not feel excited about very much these days so all I can leave you with is Sir Terry鈥檚 favourite line 鈥淚s it me?鈥

Still a silly joke about a man who is excited as he is starting a new job!

An excited man starts his new job at the zoo and is given three tasks.

First is to clear the exotic fish pool of weeds. As he does this a huge fish jumps out and bites him. To show who is boss he beats it to death with a spade. Realising his employer won't be best pleased he disposes of the fish by feeding it to the lions, as lions will eat anything.

Moving on to the second job of clearing out the Chimp house, he is attacked by the chimps that pelted him with coconuts. He swipes at two chimps with a spade, killing them both. What can he do?
Feed them to the lions, he says to himself, because lions eat anything. He hurls the corpses into the lion enclosure.

He moves on to the last job, which is to collect honey from the South American Bees. As soon as he starts he is attacked by the bees. He grabs the spade and smashes the bees to a pulp. By now he knows what to do and throws them into the lion鈥檚 cage because lions eat anything.

Later that day a new lion arrives at the zoo. He wanders up to another lion and says "What's the food like here?"

The lions say, "Absolutely brilliant, today we had Fish and Chimps with Mushy Bees."

    Happy Thursday everyone :-))))

It's exciting especially when the ice cream comes out.

    Hi Chris,

I never thought that I would ever become interested in reading someone else's blog but you are such a good writer! I can hear you saying what you are writing although I am resisting the temptation to correct your spelling and punctuation as I am a little anal about things like that.

Is it cathartic to share your life like you do in the blog and are there things that 'come out' whether you want them to or not? So many questions, so little time.

I would have always have thought that most people's lives were too boring for other people to want to read about them but I suppose there is a bit of the voyeur in all of us.

I do envy your eating out escapades. I am a real foodie but have to make do with cooking for myself as I haven't got anyone that I want to go out to eat with and besides that I live in the middle of nowhere and the choice is the local chippy or nowt.

We shouldn't dwell on what we don't have, but we should get excited about the things we do.

When I started thinking about what had made me exicted in recent times, I reallised that there is a close relationship between excitement and obsession (may be this just applies to me?!).

The last couple of years of my life weren't the best. Work was uber stressful - and then I was made redundant out of the blue - and then I got a new job but it wasn't first choice. I left my partner - voluntarily but it was still tough - and moved back to my old stomping ground. I was (and still am) one of the casulaties of the ever-increasing debt mountain.

So what did I get excited about? Excercise and health food. But I know now that these were obsessions first and foremost. They gave me an anticipatory buzz, but they weren't entirely wholesome - they nearly caused my self-destruction. I used to get excited about things I deprvied myself of, such as coffee and protein!?! Excitement should always be a good thing, shouldn't it? And now, the exercise has lapsed because the obsessive phase burned out. The healthy eating part still applies but I'm less controlling, although I still can't get excited about pleasure foods without impaling myself on a stab of guilt.

Now I have a new job to look forward to, to get excited about. This time I've chosen the job and controlled the situation - very important to me as I live to work. And I have to move to Oxford which I think will be a good thing. But I can't get excited yet (if I ever will) because the mundane considerations of adulthood conspire against me - finding somewhere to live, working out the finances, moving, worrying about what to wear, will I be good enough, etc. And worrying that I'm 'leaving behind' my best friend (you know who you are mum), who will also feel the loss.

Or am I just allowing these things to stop me becoming excited to protect myself from a let down. A typical adult behaviour. How sad though? As the excitement can never be captured once the opportunity to savour it has passed. So somehow I've got to work myself up into a frenzy of excitement - make the most of the positives of the situation I, afterall, got myself into! Most of us are lucky enough that, if the excitement proves to be unjustified, there will be more waiting for us, maybe not tomorrow, but the next day ....

Mine change all the time, but the recent ones have been

    1. Picking peas, fresh from the pod - never grown anything before and have just spent the whole summer marvelling at the power and wonder of Mother N.

    2. The big night out for my best friends' (x 3) birthday - every few months we all go out, get terrible drunk and end up at one of our houses watching Moulin Rouge, dancing around the garden to Toots and The Maytals and then for the big finale, back to the movie to cry when Sabine dies - well worth getting excited about.

    3. Hearing about my recently divorced big brothers new fledging relationship - would bring a tear to your false eye. He's too sweet to be true and I don't trust any lady to treat him riggght.

    That's enough for now.

You want them to be excited because it's such a beautiful thing to see, and you are a part of their excitemnt and wonder.
They also stir up memories too. My kids will do things, and I think, 'God, I remember doing that with 'such-a-person', or at 'such-a-place'. Sometimes I have not been aware of these memories until my own children have opened them up. Wow. I love mine to bits. Even if the smallest one has a cold and woke up at 5:30am! I think they are the meaning of life and our future.
