Children learn how to support their peers through peer mediation when conflict arises in the playground. Their teacher explains that it is important to see both sides of the story. After role-play, children explain why it is important to put yourself in someone else’s shoes and understand how they feel in order to help them resolve their issues.

Students could be introduced to a puppet who has been watching and listening to students around the school. He has seen some students being very kind to other students. Ask students to consider what the puppet has seen these students doing, and how they each appeared to be feeling.

The puppet has also seen some students arguing; one child pushed her chair out to get up, and another child tripped over it going past and pushed into her as he stumbled. The puppet can’t understand why they are arguing. Students could be asked to say or write in speech bubbles why the two children arguing think it’s the other person’s fault. The puppet could ask for the students’ help suggesting what to do, and students could come up with a solution for the two arguing children. Ask students to reflect upon how understanding someone else’s side of the story can help us sort out arguments.
