What do plants need to grow?
Description
An animation which explores the conditions a plant needs for growth. Various plants are shown, from sunflowers to water lilies. The clip traces the lifecycle of a plant, from its starting point as a seed or bulb. Five conditions for successful growth are established: water, light, a suitable temperature, air and time. Instructions are given for planting a sunflower seed and tending the plant.
Classroom Ideas
Pupils could plant sunflower seeds, following the example shown in the clip. The children could take digital photographs over a period of time showing the planting, tending and growth of their sunflowers. The class could compile their photographs into a digital slideshow and provide a commentary, perhaps with some simple instrumental accompaniment. The children could also make drawings of all the different plants they can find in and around their playground. How many different plants can they spot?
