Trade unions at Kvaerner Govan
Description
In 1999, the Kvaerner shipyard in Govan, Scotland, faced closure and workers were at risk of redundancy. Trade unions carried out a political campaign focusing on politicians and public opinion, with the aim of showing that what the workers wanted was work. Industrial action ended when the yard was bought over by GEC.
Classroom Ideas
Students could be encouraged to watch the clip with the intent of finding answers to the question: 鈥楬ow do Trade Unions influence policies and public opinion?鈥 This could lead into a more detailed case study of an industrial dispute. The tactics used in the Kvaerner campaign could be compared with other forms of action and with more recent industrial disputes. Their effectiveness could be compared.
