What is a present participle and when do we use it?

The present participle is like '-ing' in English.

It is used with en (+ present participle) to mean 'while... -ing' or 'by... -ing':

  • il s'est endormi en regardant la t茅l茅vision - he fell asleep whilst watching TV
  • j鈥檃i eu de bonnes notes en faisant mes devoirs tous les jours - I鈥檝e had good marks by doing my homework every day

How to form the present participle

To form the present participle of -er, -ir and -re verbs, there are four steps to follow.

  1. Take the nous form of the present tense, eg: nous faisons.
  2. Drop the nous and the -ons ending to get the stem, eg: fais.
  3. Add -ant, eg: faisant.
  4. Precede the verb with en, eg: en faisant.

faire 鈫 nous faisons 鈫 fais 鈫 en faisant

j'茅coute de la musique en faisant mes devoirs - I listen to music while doing my homework

danser 鈫 nous dansons 鈫 dans 鈫 en dansant

elles se sont bien amus茅es en dansant toute la nuit - they enjoyed themselves whilst dancing all night
