The work of an MSP
What do MSPs do?
Voters in Scotland have eight potential MSPs (one constituency and seven from the regional list.) They can contact any of their MSPs about devolved powers.
Work of an MSP in a constituency or region:
- hold surgeries where constituents can come with problems they need help with
- respond to emails, phone calls and letters from constituents
- attend meetings with local businesses, schools, charities and ther organisations
- speak to other organisations such as (councls or health boards) and individuals on behalf of the constituents (people who elect them)
- visit parts of the constituency to find out about issues
- raise the profile of an issue in the media
Work of an MSP in Parliament:
- write to or meet with a Cabinet Secretary or Minister
- speak in parliament during debates
- ask questons during First Minister's Questions (FMQs)
- introduce bills on topics that are important to their constituents
- take part in a committee
- work as a minister or in another government role
