20 mark essays

There are two types of 20 mark questions:

  • Discuss
  • To what extent

Discuss... Questions

You must provide information and ideas about the topic but you must also analyse and evaluate different views of the statement/viewpoint.

Sample question:Poverty is the main cause of poor health. Discuss.

For this type of essay you need to discuss the different causes of poor health. If you conclude as you go along, for example at the end of each paragraph, you need to comment on how influential a cause is. For example:

Statistics show that geography and where you live have a big impact on your health but others argue it is just another way of measuring social class because people of different social classes tend to live in the same areas.

After making such a statement, in the overall conclusion you need to make an evaluation of what is the main cause of poor health. You need to come to a judgement on it:

Overall the evidence shows that social class continues to be the most significant influence on health with statistics clearly showing that the higher your social class the longer your life expectancy and the lower your social class the shorter your life expectancy.

To what extent... Questions

You will need to analyse the issue in the question and come to a conclusion(s) which requires an evaluative judgement that uses quantitative words. For example:

Sample question: To what extent are some factors more important than others in influencing voting behaviour?

To answer a question like you must make a judgement on how important various factors are:

Class used to be the most important influence and most people think the media is significant but in 2017 age appeared to be the most influential.

Examples of quantitative evaluative words that you could use include:

  • Most important
  • Most significant
  • Least important
  • Least significant
  • Less important than in the past
  • Most effective
  • Least effective
  • Largely failed
  • Largely successful
