Section Two – Social Issues in the United Kingdom

There are two options within this section. You will have studied either Social Inequality or Crime and the Law.

In the exam there will be a choice of two questions. The two questions will be taken from the five topics within your chosen option. To be able to answer one question you will need to revise at least four of the five topics.

The five topics for the two options are:

Social Inequality

  • reasons why income/wealth inequality exists
  • reasons why health inequalities exist
  • effect of inequality on a group or groups in society
  • individualist/collectivist debate
  • effectiveness of measures taken to tackle inequalities, including government measures

Crime and the Law

  • legal rights and responsibilities of UK citizens
  • causes and theories of crime
  • impact of crime on victims, offenders, and their families
  • social and economic impact of crime on wider society
  • effectiveness of custodial and non-custodial responses to crime
