Chosen specialism

Whether as a performer, director or designer, the or needs to be completed from that one point of view. Mentioning other roles briefly can be useful, but individuals should largely focus on their one specialism.

Performers and directors

Once the main sequence of events is mapped out, required characters will be identified and can be discussed and planned in more detail, considering:

  • name
  • age
  • background
  • dialogue
  • accent
  • function in the performance

A summary of this can be included in the log initially and can be expanded on later when explaining how the work was developed and refined.

Where performers play more than one character, called , they need to ensure that their characters are different from each other so the audience understand what is going on. This is primarily achieved through , but can be enhanced by costume changes.

Designers

Designers are able to contribute to the initial response and planning stages in the same way the performers do, but they also need to consider a response to the stimulus from the point of view of their chosen specialism. For example, a lighting designer might consider the colours and style of lighting they think of when they see the , which might change as they discuss appropriate , and ideas with others. Designers should fuse design ideas with the plans for the production as a whole.
