B-Strong exhibition at the Drum

Black History Month is a celebration of Caribbean, Asian and African cultures and their contribution to British society.

A host of venues across Birmingham are holding a wide range of events throughout October including storytelling sessions, theatre productions, films, exhibitions and more… Here are a few highlights

Black History month at the Drum

The Drum in Aston has a special programme of events throughout October to celebrate Black History Month 2009.

This year the community venue has a special programme of events entitled BirminStrong which includes a specially commissioned exhibition called B-Strong that captures the essence of Birmingham based artists through a series of photographic portraits.

Sonic dub 80s rock artist Mad Professor will be making his first appearance at the Drum as part of the BirminStrong programme, other highlights include a spoken word event featuring local poet Moqapi Selassie.

Throughout the month of October Birmingham’s libraries are hosting a whole range of talks, workshops and activities to celebrate Black History Month.

Tek a walk down memory lane at the Back to Back houses and enjoy an inspiring, family friendly workshop for all with International Jamaican poet, Yasus Afari. The local poet will be sharing language, proverbs and traditions from ‘yard’. Visitors can reminisce on those sayings heard as a child and use as an adult in a Back to Back parlour setting. Booking is essential as spaces are limited.

The Birmingham Black International Film festival 2009

VENUE: Various locations across the city

DATE: 26 - 31 October 2009

The Birmingham Black International Film Festival is back for a third year with an eclectic mix of film, music, ‘live’ arts, seminars and master classes, celebrating the growth and development of black film and entertainment in the region.

The festival ends with the prestigious Music, Video and Screen Awards [MVSA] to complete what is set to be another exciting period in Birmingham’s social events calendar
