RECORDED MUSIC
The
first gramophone players arrived in Africa shortly after they came into commercial
use in Europe. In the 1930's, the idea of catering for African modern music tastes
was taken seriously by HMV. They produced a series of records (78 rpm shellac
discs) under the title Gramophone Victor.
To begin with, the series featured music from Latin America and particularly Cuba,
bands like Don Carlos and his Casino Orchestra and Rico's Creole Band. They were
hugely popular in East and West Africa and were known as GVs.
