"I play golf as I live life - with respect," says the Italian golf legend.

Raise Your Game: How did you first get into golf?

Constantino Rocca: As young boys we would caddy to make some money for the family. In those days in Italy, the caddy wasn't allowed to play so we played at night with lights. When you're young, if you're told that you can't do something, you do it! (laughs)

Achievements:

  • Member of the winning European Team. Ryder Cup, Valderrama (1997)

Before we even started hitting balls we would practice by hitting stones with bits of steel. I caddied until I was 20-years-old, became a professional teacher at 25 and by 27 I had started my career on the European Tour.

RYG: What has golf given you?

CR: Golf has given me so many experiences. I get to travel to different parts of the world and most importantly, it's taught me respect for the golf course, for the people and for nature and that's important for you in everyday life.

RYG: As an experienced player and a previous winner of the Ryder Cup, what makes a great team?

CR: It's difficult when you play the Ryder Cup because you've spent two years playing against your rivals and then you have to play together. The captain and the vice captain are very important in making the team work together. Not only do you have to play the game for yourself, but also for your partner.

I play golf as I live life - with respect. Play your game and try to do your best.
