Professor Clive Upton
Clive is consultant to the Voices project. The word map is based on the SuRE (Survey of Regional English) methodology that has been developed at Leeds and Sheffield Universities to investigate regional and social variation in English. Voices recordings will be deposited permanently with the Special Collections Library, University of Leeds, to allow for full public access.
Prof David Crystal
David is an expert on the subject of language (he's been awarded an OBE for his work) and is a consultant to the Voices project. He is a prolific author and some of his recent books include 鈥楾he Stories of English' (Penguin) and 鈥楾he Cambridge Encyclopaedia of the English Language' (Cambridge University Press).
Dr Peter Garrett
Peter is based at Cardiff University and his research is mainly in sociolinguistics and the social psychology of language. Peter and Nik Coupland have collaborated to produce the 'How good is your ear?' game.
Prof Nikolas Coupland
Nik is also based at Cardiff University and his areas of research include sociolinguistics. Nik, along with Peter, has collaborated on our accent and language game.
Dr Rachel Sutton-Spence
Rachel is based at the Centre for Deaf Studies at Bristol University and her research areas include sign linguistics and social and regional variation in BSL. Rachel is a consultant to the Voices project and has collaborated to produce the BSL survey.
Linda Day
Linda is also based at Bristol University and her research areas include the acquisition of sign language acquisition sociolinguistics. Linda has collaborated to produce the BSL survey and acted as the model for the BSL video clips.
Prof Viv Edwards
Viv is based at the University of Reading where she is Director of the National Centre for Language and Literacy. Her main area of interest is teaching and learning in multilingual classrooms - publications include 'Multilingualism in the English-speaking world' (Blackwell 2004) - and she has written many of the features included in 鈥楳ultilingual Nation'.
Jonnie Robinson
Jonnie is Curator of English Accents and Dialects at the British Library Sound Archive. He's provided sociolinguistic annotations for many of the Voices Recordings audio clips. The recordings will be deposited permanently with the British Library Sound Archive to allow for full public access.
Susie Dent Susie Dent
Susie is the resident word expert on Channel 4鈥檚 Countdown and contributes regularly to radio and TV discussions of words in the news. She's written several books on language change, including an annual popular survey of language trends and new words. Susie wrote some of the annotations on the .
