In 1887, Vincent van Gogh painted a portrait of his brother's flatmate, the Glaswegian art dealer Alexander Reid. In this programme, Reid's grandson Graham appraises the painting and provides a background to its history. The painting under discussion in this programme was originally believed to have been a self-portrait by Van Gogh, probably because of the fiery red hair of the subject. It is one of two that Van Gogh is thought to have painted of Reid, who had shared an apartment in Montmartre, Paris, with the artist's brother, Theo.

The painting is housed at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, Glasgow, thanks to a grant from the National Art Collections Fund.

Originally broadcast on 02 May 1993.
