Changing UK - The rich and the poor

The 成人快手 has commissioned a team from Sheffield University, led by Professor Danny Dorling, to compile a list of statistics that paint a picture of how out lives and communities have changed in the last 40 years.

The rich and the poor

These figures are based on surveys carried out where people were asked what they could afford. Based on their answers they were then placed in a category. For our purposes a good yardstick according to the academics is:

  • Breadline Poor: You are not able to afford any holiday either in the UK or abroad and not able to save ten pounds a week.
  • Asset Wealthy: You have assets whether in property or shares or pension of 300,000 pounds or over.
  • Exclusive Wealthy: You take more than three foreign holidays a year. You are able to buy a new car outright from one of the top car makers (Mercedes, BMW etc), or you have an income of more than 100,000 pounds a year. If you tick any one of those boxes you are considered exclusive wealthy.

Of course, we have听 seen economic decline since these surveys were conducted, so more of us may be feeling breadline poor now.

Breadline Poor

Overall in 2000, 27% of the UK population was considered breadline poor. This increased from 21.3% in 1990 and 17.1% in 1980, but the figure in 1970 was 23.1%.
Across the North East and Cumbria, the breadline poor figure was 29.8%, compared to 24.7% a decade before, 19.5% in 1980 and 25.5% in 1970.

In the 成人快手 Tees patch, the breadline poor figure in 2000 was 30%. It was 24% in 1990, 19% in 1980 and 24% in 1970. Here are the highest figures in the Tees region.
