Return to blooming Brotton

What were you getting up to on Saturday 9th June 2008? For thousands of green volunteers across the country it was a day to get dressed up in wellies and old clothes and put some love into a community project.

Springwatch action day was about thousands of volunteers coming forward, and offering a few hours of their time to make-over acres of unloved land up and down the country - and turn them into nature havens to be enjoyed by the whole community.

Our 成人快手 Tees event was a partnership with The Marshall Drive Playing Field Action Group in Brotton, with the help of the enthusiastic pupils from the adjoining St Peter's School.

"I think what we need to promote is a visit for people that's not just for a few minutes - but for a whole morning or a whole afternoon."

Richard Unthank

Between 10am and 2pm we broadcast lots of frenzied activities and got our hands dirty. These included planting a wildflower meadow, erecting bat, bird and insect boxes, uncovering some of the hidden wildlife, as well as meeting the gardening club, the BMX riders, the pupils, parents and teachers from the school.听

We even got to meet Bob the beekeeper.

Now in the midst of Autumn the Springwatch event seems a very long time ago. So what's been happening since we packed up the strimmers and spades back in June?听 Well one thing that can be said about the Action Group is that they're always full of action.听

Since we met them in June 2008, they've built a polytunnel and grown their own vegetables for the school dinners.听 They've built a twigloo - which like an igloo, but made of twigs, and is often used as an extra classroom to learn about nature.听 They've erected a bug hotel, a hedgehog house, a place for butterflies and they've even strimmed a BMX pathway through the fledging听 Brotton Woods... but what next?

The Marshall Drive Playing Field Action Group in Brotton along with St Peter's School, are eager to develop the site even further for the community to enjoy.听 Next on the agenda is to get the funding for a bird hide.听

Richard Unthank, Assistant Head Teacher at St Peters said:

"We're also looking to make a clearing for some sort of seating area, where people can sit round in a circle.听

"I think what we need to promote is a visit for people that's not just for a few minutes - but for a whole morning or a whole afternoon.听 And with that, some sensory activities where they get to use their five senses."
