Avoiding a winter breakdown

Simple checks to your car during the winter months can make a big difference to your winter driving.

Winter Checklist

  • Emergency fuel can
  • Blanket(s)
  • First Aid Kit
  • Torch
  • Spare batteries and bulbs
  • Shovel
  • In-car mobile phone charger
  • Sturdy, water resistant shoes or boots
  • De-icer and windscreen scraper
  • Money or phonecard for emergencies

When winter sets in, extra strain is placed upon your car - as the temperature drops, it takes more power to start your car and you'll be using your heater and demister more often too.

Any niggles and noises that have been hidden away under the bonnet during the year, may well become a bigger problem as winter gets a grip.

With that in mind, it's worth making some simple car checks now, to keep you safely motoring through until spring.

Preparing your car

  • Check that your vehicle is serviced regularly.
  • Check front and rear wiper blades for signs of wear and splitting.
  • Make sure that your washer bottle is full, and that it's diluted to the correct mix to avoid freezing.
  • Check all fluids and top up if necessary.
  • Check lights and indicators - make sure they are working properly and that they're free of dirt and grime.
  • Tyre condition should be checked (including the spare), for tyre pressure and tread depth.

Keeping Safe

  • If听 you听 leave the engine running to demist the car听 before听 setting听 off,听 do听 not听 leave听 it听 unattended. Not only is this an invitation to thieves, but if your keys are in the ignition and the vehicle is unattended, then your insurance company probably won't pay out, if someone does steal it.
  • Make sure your mobile is charged.
  • Keep your windows clean any smears or dirt gets lit up by the glare from oncoming headlights in bad weather.
  • Keep your lights clean.
  • Turn the two second rule into a four second rule (even more, if it's icy). You should leave around four seconds between you and the car in front, when the road are poor.

Free Winter Car Clinics

Redcar and Cleveland Council's Road Safety Team is organising three free drop-in winter car clinics, to give your vehicle the once-over, as the cold weather sets in. Each runs frmo 9:30am to 2pm.

  • December 9: Saltburn Cat Nab car park.
  • December 10: North Road car park, Loftus.
  • December 11: Windy Hill Lane car park, Marske.
