Primary Drama Workshop

This series of three videos offers guidance on using simple classroom drama activities to non-specialist teachers at KS2. The videos and accompanying notes and frameworks aim to show how classroom drama can enrich a wide range of curriculum objectives and also how the drama activities included can be adapted and refined to explore any particular topic. The three videos are also accompanied by a short Introductory video, presented by drama workshop leader, Richard Sumitro, who also presents the three videos.

In the three videos you will see non-specialist teachers working with their classes to create dramas based on the three frameworks linked below. The three frameworks focus on the beginning, middle and end of a drama and develop in complexity across the three in terms of the strategies used to build the drama. In children aged 7 and 8 in Glasgow explore traditional stories and bring the story of Rumplestiltskin to life. In upper KS2 pupils in Leeds use drama to explore working as children during the Victorian era, including working as servants in a Manor House. In upper KS2 children in London explore the beliefs of the Ancient Egyptians, including taking on the roles of archaeologists to search for the tomb of a pharaoh in The Valley of the Kings. Each framework comprises three sections and each of the CPD videos focuses on the delivery of one of those sessions.

The aim is to provide teachers with the resources they need to build an effective drama with their class; so alongside the frameworks we have provided a variety of additional resources, including with further detail on the drama strategies included, which you can follow in as much - or as little - detail as you wish. Our frameworks are based on three specific topics; but the overall aim is to guide teachers towards using some of the strategies included to explore topics of their own choosing.
