A Ride in an Intelligent Machine
Welcome to the year 2035, a future that has been designed around your values, from the 'Global Values' test. You are about to have a conversation with a driverless car. It will take around ten minutes and works best on computer or tablet. Headphones are recommended.

The Inside Story

We put the squeeze on Chris Sizemore and Mike Orwell to tell us more about the project...

Can you tell us a bit about the project?

Mike: At the start of the experience you have the chance to answer questions that determine your core values. After this, you are transported to the future, and into a driverless taxi, that is powered by artificial intelligence (AI). The experience is built upon the data you’ve provided at the start, and we want to know if the conversation with the AI feels natural.

Why have you made this?

Chris: We want to bring you stories in a new way, so we’re experimenting with a storytelling platform powered by artificial intelligence technology. In this experience you can talk directly to the characters, and the characters talk back. You build relationships with the characters and can immerse yourself in the story. We want it to feel as close to reality as possible.

What makes this different from other AI projects?

Chris: Standard smart speaker systems in the market today allow only for one character talking to the audience, but the drama usually requires protagonists, antagonists, side-kicks and other characters to bring the story to life. This technology allows writers to create multiple characters which can talk to each other as well as to the audience, so that writers can turn a straightforward conversation into a fully-fledged interactive drama.

Who created ‘A Short Ride in an Intelligent Machine’?

Chris: For "A Short Ride in an Intelligent Machine" writer brought the two characters of the CAR and the EYE to life so that they build a relationship not only with the audience, but also with each other as the story progresses. In conjunction with the front end designers from , was plugged in to power the conversation that audiences see as they journey forward in the story - and in CAR itself.

What could be next?

Chris: Imagine a retelling of War of the Worlds where you are Skyping with characters as the Martians land, where your influence can change the course of the invasion, where the story plays out on the media through which we get most of our news. This is just one exciting idea, there are countless that could become possible with this technology.
