Morocco 0-0 Spain (3-0 on penalties)

    Guillem Balague
Spanish football journalist on ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Radio 5 Live

I could see it coming for Spain.

Spain were not in the right dynamic. Morocco played better because they were closer to their game plan.

The problem is that Spain have got one way of playing and that is it.

It works well against bigger teams but against teams like Morocco – fingers crossed we don’t concede in a counter, fingers crossed we don’t concede at a set piece, and fingers crossed something benefits us.

Spain have lost three consecutive World Cup penalty shootouts now. That is a joint record with - obviously - England (1990-2006) and Italy (1990-1998).

You can see and feel how much it means to this nation.

No one would have thought they could get this far.

Can they do it again? I would be suspecting this might be their last win but so what!

Spain's penalty woes started when Pablo Sarabia - brought on specifically for the shootout - missed the first effort.

The Paris St-Germain midfielder had scored his previous five penalties, shown in the graphic below, but missed with a low shot which hit the right-hand post.

Morocco 0-0 Spain (3-0 on penalties)

    Guillem Balague
Spanish football journalist on ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Radio 5 Live

Spain were nowhere close to France, Brazil, England or Argentina.

We don’t have that special player, we don’t have the prowess up front. We don’t have enough collectively.

No one felt that way in Spain. It just didn’t inspire us.

The best thing from the tournament is Twitch and Luis Enrique talking to us.

    We are miles away.

Spain only had three shots on target tonight... and two of them were in the shootout. All saved by Yassine Bounou, known as Bono. The 31-year-old, who was born in Canada, has played in Spain for a decade now.

Walid Regragui only took over as Morocco manager in August. What an impact!

He is the first African manager to lead a country to the quarter-finals of a World Cup.

    John Bennett
³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ World Service Sport on ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Radio 5 Live

I think the tournament needed this.

I think it needed one of Saudi Arabia, Morocco or Tunisia to go really far because their fans have created something really special.

It’s fantastic to have them in the last eight.

Including every World Cup penalty shootout ever, of the players to come on in the second half of extra time and take a penalty, five out of 10 (50%) have scored.

Of those to come on in the final 10 minutes, it is two out of five (40%). The final five minutes and we are down to one out of four (25%).

Two of the players to miss in each of those time slots were tonight - one for each team.

Achraf Hakimi - ice in his veins. He's booked Morocco a place in the quarter-finals of the World Cup with the deftest of penalties. Little dink down the centre of the goal. He and his team-mates bowing in front of the fans who've been magnificent all night.

They cheered every kick. The noise at full-time as loud as for that winning spot-kick. Africa will have a team in the last eight.

Morocco are into the quarter-finals for the first time ever. Only the fourth African team to reach that stage after Cameroon in 1990, Senegal in 2002 and Ghana in 2010.

None of those three made it further.

It's Portugal or Switzerland for Morocco in the last eight. Live build-up to that last-16 tie has started over here.

Spain's players are just slumped on the centre circle.

What a contrast to the scenes of jubilation coming from the Morrocco fans. A monent of history for them.

The players are dancing, the fans are dancing, the manager is dancing. Wow.

You can’t argue Morocco don’t deserve it.

The hear, the fight, the spirt, and then the guts during that penalty shootout.
