The only way England can win this game is by matching India's first-innings score in their second innings and then setting them 200 to win. That is the mentality that England's batters will have to have in the changing room.

Talk in the dressing room? "I don't think we'll study what they do too much, we're a very unique side in how we go about things. We don't get too down when we have bad days but we don't get too high when we have good ones. You've got to stay level, be consistent and recognise the things that you can improve.

"There are ways we can do better and we'll look to do that tomorrow. It moved around a lot more than we expected it to, with the amount of swing, when we started this morning. But our challenge now will be that the ball is 30 overs old so hopefully there will be some dew around in the morning when it's colder, and that may be able to help us."

Still believe you can win? "Of course, you never look at a game like you're dead and buried. There will be some guys who can take a look at themselves and think, right, I can do better today so hopefully we can put that right."

England batting coach Marcus Trescothick on TNT Sports: "Yeah, a challenging day. We had some good moments - we batted well up until lunch when the ball was swinging around and nipped around more than we expected it to.

"Zak Crawley batted very well to get his score but we just didn't get enough partnerships together in the middle, to put the total on the board. Winning the toss was important for us, but it is what it is - we've got to come back better tomorrow."

• Openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett shared 64 for the first wicket, before the latter skewed Kuldeep Yadav to Shubman Gill in the covers
• Ollie Pope was out on the stroke of lunch, looking to advance down the pitch to Kuldeep, to leave England 100-2
• Joe Root and Crawley shared 37 before the latter was bowled by a beauty from Kuldeep for 79
• From there England's crumbled with Root, Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes out in an 12-ball spell without the tourists adding a single run. That left them 175-6
• They were eventually bowled our for 218 with Kuldeep taking 5-72 and Ravichandran Ashwin 4-51
• Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma then both made half-centuries as India closed on 135-1, trailing by just 83

The bottom line is that England had too many starts in their top five without anyone going on and making a match-changing score.

Zak Crawley played beautifully again and he'll be frustrated that throughout the series he's been England's best batsman by quite some way in terms of consistency and style but without making a game-changing contribution.

We all know that in India first-innings runs are key.

England looked in a great position and were well set. They got through the opening barrage from Jasprit Bumrah, who was making the ball talk.

It felt like there was an opportunity and Ben Duckett tried to take it and put pressure on the India spinners but skewed that catch. The wheels then started turning for India.

The India spinners just had control of the proceedings.

If you'd said to me at 100-1, when England were about to take lunch, that this would be the situation four hours later I wouldn't have believed it.

There has been big moments in this series where England have lost an hour where they've lost the game. That hour where they lost five wickets for eight runs is going to cost them.

India are miles ahead.

At 100-1 and 137-2 the tourists shouldn't have been bowled out for 218. But, they were thanks to the brilliance of spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Ravichandran Ashwin.
