I'm looking forward to Friday - it has been a good week for Test cricket.

With both sides having played a game, I think the standard, I don't think England need to improve that much, just tinker a bit here and there.

It is the fielding that I'm really going to focus on because it is a big year in Test cricket and dropped catches are going to be magnified massively. There's no reason why - they can all move and catch. It's just concentration.

It will get more difficult in India. This is a poor Sri Lanka team. You have to put it into perspective. But the conditions and preparation were not in England's favour. That is why it is a really good win.

We are not sure if Karunaratne will be fit for the second Test. Kusal Mendis has to be given a break. He looks really low in confidence. Also, Ramesh Mendis is a young-spinner - bring him in. Dilruwan Perera is not bowling as he usually does.

Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal: "We were outplayed in first innings with bat and ball. As a batting unit, especially playing at home, you have to get a big total in the first innings. It cost us the game.

"Everyone did their bit in the second innings. We played outstanding knocks in the second innings. We have to take the positives out of this.

"Our batting unit played like we were in South Africa."

Boring morning wasn't it?! England made it look so simple. They handle the situation very nicely. It is a very good Test for England.

Sri Lanka have to look how they approached the second innings. 360 on this pitch was a really good effort. But you have got to do it over two innings.

  9. 'Lawrence has fantastic presence'published at 05:30 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2021

England bowler Stuart Broad on Dan Lawrence: "I feel like Dan Lawrence has already played 50 Tests, which is a great testament for a 23-year-old. He has got a fantastic presence. Good players seem to have that about them and he has it. He's clear about how he goes about his business; he's uncomplicated. To be there at the end on his debut... debuts are a blur, but for him to have looked as calm as he did is great to see."

I can't think Sri Lanka will gift England two poor days in the next Test like they did in this. This next match will be really tough. Sri Lanka will be better. The pitch may be that it spits and explodes after two days.

I am happy England have played in difficult conditions and won the game.

More from Joe Root on TMS: "We expected a bit of fightback, especially in home conditions. It is always difficult, coming into a tour on the back of limited preparations and two spinners with minimal game time trying to bowl them out. It is a great experience for them.

"We're very aware that we'll have to keep on getting better. Things will get tougher as this tour goes on. As long as we keep the attitude of looking to improve, we'll put ourselves in a good position to build on what is a very nice start

"We know we have areas to improve on but we are on an upward curve. We're doing a lot of good things and that is a great place to be. I'm really proud of how we've gone about things in this last little period. It is important that we keep looking to get better all the time."

Root will be delighted. At the start of a tour. if you can win early it gives the whole dressing room a boost. There will come a time when they lose in the next few weeks. You don't generally go through the India team without losing a game. That is why it is so important to win 2-0 in Sri Lanka.

England captain Joe Root on TMS: "It was a frustrating start yesterday but that can happen. It was important to keep the dressing room as relaxed as possible. The two lads, one coming back into the team, one starting, showed great maturity."

Matt Dawson: Still think that Bairstow is a part of England's future.. a quality player with quality contributions for this England team.. might be key for England's future in test cricket! Still think England's fielding needs some work though.

  15. Postpublished at 05:17 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2021

England captain and player of the match Joe Root: "To come here with the little preparation we have had and play in the manner we have is very impressive. We worked extremely hard and for the spinners to come out of the game with two five-fors is a great effort. Without the preparation, it is testament to their characters. It is a good start to the tour. We know we have to keep getting better but I am really pleased with the start we have had.

"The exciting thing is there is more to come from the group.

"What pleased me most with my own innings was my mindset. I thought I had a good balance between attack and defence. It was nice to go on and make a really big one after I did a lot of talking before the game."

England bowler Stuart Broad on TMS: "Day one was our strongest day. We set the game up beautifully. On there, I wouldn't want to be chasing much more than 130 but I was pretty calm this morning. A lot of hard work goes into winning over here so it is a good feeling.

It looked like we could lose a wicket every ball last night and when your best batsmen is run out and you think 'oh no is it going to be one of those days?'

"We were pretty happy when play finished last night. Every ball spitting and turning. Sri Lanka sensed something. It felt calm here this morning. We had a job to do and felt we had enough in tank to chase 30-odd. To do it without losing a wicket is awesome."
