Northern Ireland pair Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell have missed the cut in the PGA Championship at Wentworth.

World number two McIlroy and Portrush player McDowell finished on five over after both carding a two-over-par 74 in Friday's second round.

Former Open champion Darren Clarke, who is level after a 70, was inside the cut mark of two over.

Gareth Maybin ended seven over after a 75 while Michael Hoey's 81 left him well back on 10 over.

McIlroy's hopes of squeezing in for the weekend action ended at the 17th when he took a double-bogey seven.

The Holywood player also carded five bogeys and four birdies as he followed up an opening 74 with another disappointing round.

"It was tough to really make any ground," said McIlroy. "It was a grind and I didn't play particularly well, I didn't give myself many chances."

McDowell came into the PGA with two wins in his last three tournaments but he made an early exit after a round which included four bogeys and a birdie.

Shane Lowry (71) was the best of the Irish on three under with Damien McGrane (73) one over.

Paul McGinley (75) and Peter Lawrie (72) ended on two over while Barrie Trainor (82) was back on 13 over.

Italy's Francesco Molinari holds a one-shot lead over the field on six under.
