Lucy, John Hurt! How did you do it? "We decided we wanted him, so I rang
his agent - and they said no! I sent him the script anyway. Then I
found out where he was appearing in a play. I bought a ticket, rang
the theatre
and asked them to ask him whether he'd see me for five minutes. He
agreed and we chatted about the script. A few days later he rang me
to say he'd do it. It sounds like I was pestering him, which I was!"
What was the Budget? "We had 拢1000, but I got loads of
things free. I ought to work out what the true budget would have been
because it would be interesting to know. John Hurt waived his fee
and so did the hotel where he stayed for the two day shoot.
We had five rolls of super 16mm film which were donated. A costume
company in London sent down 拢2000 worth of costumes for free.
The lighting company didn't charge. We didn't even pay for the crane
we used for the opening shot. I made hundreds of phone calls!
Most of the budget went on food for the crew.
There were 35 people on set one day."
Has the film been well received? "It's on at Glastonbury Festival this year,
but I'm working so I won't be there. It's amazing - brilliant to get
it shown. I've entered it for Edinburgh as well.
I sent John Hurt a copy of the film when it was finished and he rang
me to say he liked it."
