How many migrants travel on the world's deadliest route?

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

Since the start of 2014, about 200,000 migrants have safely arrived in Italy. Around 2% of that number did not survive, says Maurizio Albahari - author of Crimes of Peace: Mediterranean Migrations. Albahari says around 30,000 people have made the crossing into Italy since the start of 2015, with authorities expecting more arrivals than last year. EU foreign ministers will meet in Luxembourg on Monday morning to discuss the deaths of migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean from Africa. The UN says the route from North Africa to Italy and Malta has become the world's deadliest, and a robust rescue capacity is needed to patrol the waters. This clip is originally from 5 live Breakfast on Monday 20 April 2015.
