This spicy romantic comedy is based on money transactions and glamorous parties in modern day Mumbai.听听Directed by Canadian born filmmaker, Shona Urvashi, Saas, Bahu and Sensex provides a modern outlook on India.
It depicts India as a country emerging as the world鈥檚 leading superpower caught between modernity, conservatism and materialism.
The movie revolves around Nitya Sen (Tanushree Dutta) living in Kolkata. Nitya is a young woman who had to abandon her ambition of studying an MBA in America because of her parents' divorce. As a result, she had to relocate to New Mumbai by living her childhood place (Kolkata) behind.
Keen to start a new life for her daughter and herself, Nitya鈥檚 mother, Vinita (Kiron Kher) joins the high social life led by the local ladies. She also decides to dabble into the volatile world of stock markets and shares.听
But it is not long before mother and daughter reach an all time low in the big city.So Nitya seeks solace in the company of Ritesh (Anjur Khanna). Ritesh is a colleague at the call centre where they both work. He is amongst a dying breed of kind-hearted, principled young men in the city.
He has a strong sense of integrity, despite dating Kirti (Masumeh Makhija) - a middle class girl with delusions of grandeur and dreams of marrying for money.
Saas, Bahu Aur Sensex takes an engaging look on how Mumbai鈥檚 inhabitants cope with their everyday lives, told through a story that seamlessly combines humour, grief and drama.
It is a perfect example of parallel Indian cinema at its very best reflecting the changing face of Indian society. It shows how some people whole-heartedly embrace global consumerism whilst defiantly resisted by others.
Distributed by Warner Bros. Saas, Bahu Aur Sensex comes from the makers of classic comedies like Chashme Baddoor, Jalwa, and Chup Ke Se. The film releases in UK cinemas this September 2008.
