kids, this is the same story all over ,sadly: in the village where i live, the village was given swings etc by the (at that time)owner of the castle in 1988 and is n ow in a disgusting state! the grass gets cut once in a blue moon,is full of dogs dirt(shame on mothers who take their kids to play and let their dogs foul the place up!)Now people are complaining that its in a bad state but who's to blame?, over here its the users--the kids -some as young asq eight vadalise the place and the response from the parents? "oh they're just kids-they have to let off steam"!! I hope on Flotta you will be able to raise some cash and repair things --how about parents doing repairs in their same time-maybe that would cut some costs:

Can you not get some funding from the lottery? I think you almost qualify as Children in Need, too. What a disgrace! Good luck in getting some new swings.

This is a sad story that you present. Now, a lot of people visit Orkney and by-pass Flotta when they arrive at the ferry pier on the Mainland. I suggest you put up a big sign just by the gang-plank - or at the bus stop - illustrated by your blog and with a collecting box underneath. Text: "Please would each visitor to Orkney be kind enough to contribute 10p towards a new play park for Flotta children." Too bad that the tourist season is drawing to a close!

We have been trying to raise money but we dont have enough yet we have been on peoples millions but we got out voted and we have tried the lottery before.

Surely it should be a fundamental piece of the island's infrastructure! A children's playpark is hardly a luxury. I'm afraid there may be some insurance implications if parents just went out and 'did something'. Such is our risk-averse culture...

olive or sunflower FC?

Well as we all know Flotta is famous as the olive&sunflower growing capital of Northern Europe...

Is there a big business who might be willing to donate some cash? Or people who donate money can have a brick with their name on it on the path? Bake sale?
thelovelyOutlander from thinking
Funnily enough, there is a big business right on their doorstep...which does make annual donations to local charities, but maybe a local playpark doesn't come under that heading?
Flying Cat from clutching a small talisman
The big business donates money through VAO and they turned us down - we were only asking for 拢500 from them - we wanted to buy some seats and tables so that the place would look good and all ages of people could enjoy it.

Maybe if you'd added an extra zero? Weird and wonderful are the ways of charitable donors...

Whatever happened to the 拢9000 mentioned some time ago by the Flotta Play Area Action Group on their blog? Surely you could ask them to use some of that to make the area safe.
Hillsider from The Silly Isles
The 拢9000 is still in the bank but when you are updating play areas 拢9000 doesnt even buy the safety matting that has to be used, so this is why we are still trying to source more funding just to provide a basice play area.

if there is such a good community spirit in flotta where were all the volenteers today helping to plant trees on the play park? when it comes to any manual work there are no grown ups to be found.yet they are the first to moan about the PLAY PARK and how they are hard done by. if these parents cared so much about the play park get your sleeves rolled up and do something about it. work with your hands instead of your mouths.

I empathise with you all. Shapinsay have been trying to upgrade our Playpark for a while now , Children in Need turned us down , The community have raised 拢5000 a mere splash in the ocean of the cost of the Park . Try the Robertson Trust or the Gannochy Trust maybe The Council scraped funding playparks but perhaps they might change their minds and we all live in the hope that the children of both islands are able to have some fun. Would be interested how you get on as we may be able to compare notes. If you wish to contact me then please ask IBHQ for email address. good Luck
