Dag Blog

Dag, one of IB's frequent commentors, emailed me recently with a few pics and a few lines about Norway at this time of year. I thought it was an interesting description of Norsky life, and asked him I could blog it, so with Dag's permission, here it is.....

Hei Ruth!

I am sorry it has been such a long time since I wrote to you.
I have been offline for while.
Autumn is not my best season. I feel like the bear who wants to sleep all winter. It's all about the lack of light. I have always been like this since I was a kid. We have high mountains so when we look out the window , we don't see the sky.
But October was nice with good weather and frost. We have had just one stormy day. The weather was bad in the North Sea, probably in Shetland too.
I am looking forward to January and snow. I think we will get snow this winter. We have no sun now. The sun left us 11.Nov and will not reurn before 1.Feb. But in January I can see that the days are getting longer. I start to feel alive again. Spring , summer and early autumn are my favourite seasons.

Our daughters are doing fine in Trondheim. We are going on a family trip to Aberdeen and do the Christmas shopping. In fact it's not quite true, I don't like the big cities, we are going to stay in Inverurie. I hope to buy one or five bottles of single malt. But it's only a weekend trip, but I looking foreward eating haggis and black pudding ( a wee dram too)

We had a little trip to Lysefjorden and watched Preikestolen from the other side of the fjord. I think I've said that I have fallen in love with Icelandic horses. We are planing to buy a few, but first they need a room a " stall" We are hoping to start building a boathouse, a naust and Rome was not built in one day. So I have to do like Stalin, make a 5 years plan.
The area around Lysefjorden is called " Litla Island" . It is the area in Norway which has most " islandshestar". There are more horses than people, they say.

"Eg sender nokre bileter" means he's included some pictures. And here they are...

Icelandic horses.

Dags Drams
This was a photo Dag sent after his trip to some of the Scottish Distilleries in summer. It's quite a collection!!

Nice pictures Dag!

Super photos, Dag! Do you ever drink any of your collection? Are the bottles full or empty? Best wishes and good luck for the rest of the winter.

Jill from EK

I've always thought that living in the canyon that is 'the street' in Stromness would have the same depressive effect in winter, but there is still the option to 'climb' out' and see the big skies of Orkney. I know someone who will drool over the fantastic whisky collection, and will also wonder at the seemingly intact nature of same. Here in Anorak Towers no bottle of whisky, no matter how venerable, would ever be allowed to survive long enough to become part of a collection... I'm almost sure parental units learnt a song about islandshest in Norwegian class many moons ago...

Flying Cat from a pair of stout livers (and an admiring glance)

At our Norsk evening class many years ago we were obliged to learn, and sing not a pretty sound, a little ditty. "Ri, Ri, mot Islandshest" Nevertheless I think they are beatiful horses.

First of all, thank you, Ruth, for letting me be a part of Island Blogging. Yes,Jill, the bottles are full. I haven't taste a drop. But I enjoy a wee dram of single malt. The smell and taste are so genuine and complex. I only collect bottles of single malt from Scotland, no Irish or American whiskey. I have to admit that I have a much bigger collection than this one. I will send Ruth some pictures later.

Dag from Norway

I am sure I must not be seeing right. The bottles look full. [very nice looking collection, by the way]. Different folks, different collections. I wonder whether Hermit could hit ANY of those bottles at 50 feet? I can just imagine the fun of a no holds barred brawl in that room [dreaming of a good ole western movie ... They don't make them the way they used to!!]

The pictures look so beautiful and just make you want to go. Thank you for sharing them, Dag and Ruthandort.

great photos and the collection is good. I could never have a collection of full whisky bottles though, got loads of empties ones though.

Hi Dag. Do you have a bottle of Scapa in your collection? I can spot the Highland Park bottle, but I'm not sure if I can see any Scapa. I like whiskey, and out of the two Orkney ones Scapa suits me more. It's a good thing it's not me with the collection - I'd have to collect empty bottles!

Rachondarox from Lancashire

Hello, Rachondarox, I haven't a small bottle of Scapa, but I do have a large one.In fact I'm a member of the Scapa Crew. Scapa is one of my favourite whisky. I hope to visit Orkney next summer and also have a look at the two distillery

Hey Dag, you're Featured Blog!!!

Ruthodanort from Unst

Cold tea of varying strengths, rachondarox. No-one will ever know you drank it all!

Flying Cat from titillated by Talisker

Hei Dag. I'm sure you will like Orkney but you may be a bit disappointed on the distillery front' Highland Park is open for visitors, you have to pay an entrance fee so the dram is no longer free as it once was. Scapa is what the industry calls "quiet" at the moment. That means not making whisky. They still keep huge quantiyies of it maturing and they restart production occasionall to keep the stocks up, but it does mean you can't visit. Har det godt. Kanskje vi sees neste sommer.

Hyper-Borean from The spirit safe

Hei Hyper-Borean. La oss h氓pe at vi treffest til sommeren. Thank you for the information about the two distilleries on Orkney. I'm a fan of Ian Rankin, and the detective Rebus has got his own Highland Park whisky called Rebus 20. But I guess this one is rather expensive. I'm also looking foreward to visit Kyrkjv氓g or Kirkwall and see the great cathedral.

Dag from Norway

Hei Dag. Yes I saw the Rebus whisky, very dear I think. When you visit you should go to the shop on Bridge Street which sells whisky, I must not advertise, they have the most amazing stock of different malts. A whisky lover's paradise. Hilsen og god jul.

I don't think J S & M would be advertising too much, kjaere Hyper!

Takk for julehelsinga, Hyper-Borean, and a Merry Christmas to you too.

Dag from Norway

Hi Dag - Scapa's one of my favourites too. I think people know I like whisky - I got three bottles of the stuff this Christmas! Hmmmmm
