Visiting Orkney

I came doon to Orkney on Sunday, and am bidin with my Mum n Dad in Orphir for a week. The intention was to get Halle (Dad's Orkney Yole) ready for the water, get her afloat and have a few sails oot. Well, so far we have given relevent parts of her a few coats of varnish, given her a coat of antifouling, and washed down her hull. But the weather has decreed that there will be no sailing. Life sucks sometimes, but there you have it.

Anyway, my oldest daughter came down the other day too and together we have been keeping ourselves busy with window shopping and having mochas and lattes in various cafes. Very holiday-esque, don't you think?

Also I've been catching up with various friends that I havn't seen for a while, which has been all very enjoyable. I went a walk to the Ness in Stromness the other night with a pall, we intended to make it a good pulse-increasing hour, but got cold and instead scurried off to another friends for a couple glasses o wine! Here's a shot she took of me with borrowed hat, and Hoy (nearly visible in the haze) in the background.

In you easter bonnet with all the thrills upon it, you'll be the grandest lady, no, it falls down there don't you think??

Happy memories of sailing in Halle under previous ownership. Hope you enjoyed fitting out.

Would rather see a shot of your Dad`s Orkney Yole. Not that there is anything wrong with your mugshot.

Lingman from Flotta

Hi Lingman, you are back?! How is fishing?

mjc from NM,USA

Yepp, a shot o Halle wouldo been good, but apart from one day when we got her ootside for the antifouling and washing down, she's been inside a shed without any 'elbow room' for takin photos. Next time I'm down, I promise I'll do better! Hyper, did you sail with Ian the boat builder?

Ruthodanort from Unst

Wife was in Vancouver recently and had fresh ling. She never knew such a thing existed, but told me it was absolutely delicious. Lingman: did you finish all of that huge ling you caught last year (off Flotta, was it not?), or is some still in the freezer?

mjc from NM,USA

Y'see, this is where mjc comes in so handy. He remembers Ancient Blogs, like a sort of one-man historical archive. I think it's wonderful...

mjc: Hope your wife had Keppleton Kidney tatties with her Ling. When your Dad hoping to get Halle in the water Ruth?

Lingman from Flotta

Ruth, yes I did sail with Ian and I am looking forward to sailing again this summer, either in Frances or the new boat Eve. Mjc did you know that the shetland dialect for ling is olick?

Hyper-Borean from A noost/noust

No, Hyper-B., I did not. I did see a huge Ling at the fishmonger's not so long ago, but it was not speaking (its head had been chopped off), # Lingman, thanks: I'll tell the wife about Keppleton (Kepplestone?) Kidney tatties, and she can ask the waiter or cook at the restaurant, but I doubt they'll have them (they doubtless carry some generic organic new potatoes).

So, no doubt, hence Olickgob, relation by marriage to Lerwick Trevor.....possibly.

Flying Cat from elementary, my dear...

Lingman, dunna ken sorry. Depends on loadsa stuff. And wadder. of coorse. But I'm back home noo so if there's a wadder window it wid need to be a long een so I can get doon on Northlink!

Ruthodanort from Unst

Hyper-Borean: The only olick I ken is Olick o`Catmuirhall and you would get a right skelp on the lug if you called her a Ling.

Lingman from Flotta

Ah! but Lingman, that's the difference between piltocks and cuithes.

Hyper-Borean from On the tilfers

For the difference between, and pictures of, pillocks and cuithes, go to Backie's (from Westray) archives - a year or more ago (probably his fourth or fifth posting, methinks). If one blogs enough, it's simply amazing what is learnt about island life then and now.
