Pelamis

An announcement reached me early this morning that the Arnish Fabrication Yard could benefit from an order for 4 Pelamis units for a 'wavefarm' in Orkney, and possibly 23 other ones for Portugal. Although it's more than likely that the Portuguese will make those themselves. There is also an order in the pipeline are also several hundred turbines to be constructed for a windfarm in the Thames Estuary.

This would indeed be a fantastic windfall (sic) for the Fabrication Yard.

Small problem.

There is nobody about to operate the Yard at the moment. Any takers?

AMEC have laid 31 staff off in Darlington today -that's what I call a start!

Arnish never have built turbines. They have, however, fabricated the tubular/conical steel towers that the turbines and the blades sit on. The turbines are made by specialist manufacturers and are very expensive. The steel towers are not difficult to fabricate and are much cheaper in comparison. The problem being that the cost of transportation of the completed steel structures becomes a significant percentage of the tower manufacturer's cost - the further the distance from the place of manufacture to the windfarm location the higher the percentage.
