Just wanted to share some pictures of Ness, taken just over a week ago.

The second photo shows where the supplies for the Eoropie Lighthouse were landed. In among those rocks during WW11 someone used to signal to U boats but no one ever found out who it was - it must have been a local with phenomenal knowledge as no one I know ventures around those rocks and I've fished in every possible spot between there and Port of Ness. Many years ago there was a bochan on Eoropie beach ( the opening of the football club killed it) but there was a famous trial of many of the local drinkers on the mainland. One of the accused was asked by the prosecution barrister why he went there? He replied, For a good drink sir.' 'And what would you call a good drink Mr Gillies?' 'Grant's Standfast sir.' Needless to say the court erupted.

As LadyGlencora (the Pallisers) would have said: kirks, kirks, beaches, beaches .... # Curious though, why are they almost invariably "empty" - not a (living) soul around.

The aforementioned trial actually took place at Stornoway Sheriff Court back in the late ‘70s, after the local constabulary took exception to some blokes enjoying a quite pint and a game of darts. Nowadays they’d also have confiscated the peat burning stove that was there, as it would’ve contravened Scotland’s recently introduced smoking ban in public places. MJC, I was on a "packed beach" two months ago, with all of 30 folk on Luskentyre Beach. But that's Harris, must be something in the air there...

The emptiness will be due to all the tourists that form such a solid foundation for our economy. Alternatively, it's why we need new developments to stop the dependence on the non-existent tourists.

I think the golden beaches are generally empty because although it looks tropical it really isn't bikini weather 364 days of the year.

I have been in Lewis since late 2004 and am observing life on this fascinating island from an outsider's perspective. I look out at the lighthouse every day - as it looks out over the island and the sea.
