Tong Games

Last Saturday, 15 July, saw the Tong Games in full swing. And it was better than ever. Just a little rundown of events:

highland dancing
one man and his dog plus a few sheep
hit the coconut with up to 3 balls
various drinkstands as well as a beertent
craftstalls
3 bouncey castles
several pipers + competition
a brass band
helicopter flypast plus stunts
Spitfire flypast (one of them is called Lewis and Harris)
athletics
成人快手 Sports Relief "Run a mile"

Heavy events
tossing the caber (a long pole of wood)
lifting 100kg heavy spheres of rock
tossing a bale of hay up to 20 ft high
flipping tractor wheels (the hind ones)
pulling said tractor wheels

It was very well attended, there was a free bus service from nearby Stornoway and everything appears to have passed off without a hitch. Apologies if I inadvertently omitted your event. A little gallery of pictures of the day:

I found your blog while searching for information on Hattersley looms. Believe it or not, there are 3 working looms here in Otago, and they will be coming in September to Oamaru (where I live) and will be housed in our Historic Precinct where there are a number of traditional craftspersons. I am a fiber artist and dyer, and a friend of the woman who will be taking over custodianship of the looms. Obviously, we cannot produce Harris Tweed here, but it is intended that the looms will continue to weave fabric such as modern tartans. http://shirleygoodwin@blogspot.com PS I have a fondness for lighthouses, as my grandmother was raised on one.

Great photos Arnish, surely there was a dance after?
