In the previous post, about Eishken, a reader left the comment (all constructive comments welcome) that the island looked bleak and unwelcoming, with no trees. However, there are trees in Lewis. Those that follow my exploits through my AOL blog will have seen pictures with trees. The Castle Grounds in Stornoway have plenty of trees. Unfortunately, hundreds were blown down in a hurricane in January 2005. Winds peaking at 134 mph raged all over the Western Isles. Five lives were lost in the Uists, 拢15m worth of damage was done. The damage in the Castle Grounds will take a long time to be repaired. There are some tree plantations across Lewis, such as at Ath Linne, near the Harris border. Along the A858 Achamor to Gearraidh na h-Aibhne road stand the remains of failed plantations. The trees there died as a result of a fungus infection. Small stands dot the island in various places, to screen buildings from the wind. Many trees can be seen bowed in the direction of the prevailing southwesterly wind.

The soil is generally very poor, and not conducive to the growth of much more than heather and spaghnum moss. Drainage generally does help to improve the situation.
