Some day...

I'm writing this on Boxing Day, after a day with the most stupendous weather. Brilliant sunshine from the word go, absolutely dazzling. Went for a spin in a car with acquaintances of mine here in the town. I had intended to go to Ness, for the reasons I set out in the previous post "Beachlife". As we were heading down the A857 from Stornoway to Barvas, we noticed a number of emergency vehicles blocking the road ahead. As we came to a halt, a car could be seen sitting in the verge. After a minute, fire service personnel went round it and pulled a yellow tarpaulin over the vehicle. Two fire engines and an ambulance were in the road with flashing lights. It was clear that a very serious accident had taken place, and the road would be closed for a while. A change of plan was in order, and we doubled back to Stornoway and went to Carloway, Dalmore and Dalbeag along the Pentland Road. The low sunlight, later the setting sun painted everything in the most dazzling of colours. After sunset, we visited the Callanish Stones, but it was sufficiently light to appreciate the beauty of the windless scene. It wasn't until we passed Achamor that the light failed completely.
On return to Stornoway, we learned that two people had died in the two vehicle crash at Barvas, and one person had been taken to hospital. As is the norm in a small community like Lewis, the casualties were well known characters.
