Zuza 6 September 2004
Piecing together the听life of听an听African woman brought to听Britain in 1929

This summer see the 75th anniversary of the Great Exhibition which took place on the Town Moor in Newcastle in 1929. The exhibition was designed to show the world what the region had to offer and听 entertainment for the local population.

In the amusement area an African village was set up, peopled with men and women brought over from Algeria. A 28-year-old woman, Zuza and her husband and baby son were among them.听听Zuza died soon after her arrival and was buried in an unmarked grave in Jesmond.

Lesley Gibson talks to researcher Lloyd Gibson about the forgotten history of the young woman and talks to those who still remember the African village.
