Brigitte Syamalevwe Saturday 2 November 2002
28 million people in sub Saharan Africa are infected with HIV. In Zimbabwe life expectancy is now just 37 years. When you see these statistics you understand why Kofi Annan has said that the AIDs crisis is a tragedy of biblical proportions. Next week there is a major UN conference in Johannesburg on AIDS in Africa.

Brigitte Syamalevwe from Zambia has dedicated the last ten years of her life, fighting not just AIDS but the powerlessness of African women which makes them more vulnerable to the disease.
Brigitte, a mother of ten who is herself HIV positive is in London to address the Catholic Institute for International Relations. She talks to Martha about her personal experience of the disease.
