Indian solar engineers 22 March 2010
Women providing electricity to remote villages

In many of the least developed countries in Africa and Asia, uneducated, poor women are taking solar power to the remotest corners. 30,000 homes in over 800 villages have already been lit and are managed by women who have been trained as solar engineers. Solar cookers, meeting the cooking needs of 400 households, are also being made by illiterate women. It all began in the State of Rajasthan in India where the Barefoot College in Tilonia was set up more than thirty years ago. The college, with branches now all over the country, gives hands-on training to poor village people, training, over the years hundreds of doctors, teachers and health specialists. Sunita Thakur went to Tilonia to meet some of these women.
