Anti-Suffrage Groups There's still a lot of debate about whether it was the militant suffragettes or the persuasive suffragists who finally won a limited franchise for women at the end of the First World War and for everyone ten years later.
It is generally assumed that all women of the time thought it was a good idea. Not so. In 1908 the Women's National Anti-Suffrage League was formed.
David Doughan, author of the Dictionary of British Women's Organisations and awarded an MBE for his services to women's studies, looks at the reasons why women fought against the right to vote. Dictionary of British Women's Organisations by Peter Gordan and David Doughan, published in paperback by Frank Cass ISBN 0713040459
