Winning the Royal Cross
Major Janet Pilgrim has been awarded a rare Royal Red Cross, the army medics equivalent of the Victoria Cross. In 2007 she commanded Basra air base鈥檚 field hospital in Iraq, while serving with The Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps.听 Under constant enemy fire,听Major Pilgrim听remained a rock of calm in charge of the busiest military field hospital since the Falklands war.听 She鈥檚 been compared to Florence Nightingale, who in 1883 became the Royal Red Cross鈥檚 first winner for her devotion to the sick in the Crimean War. Jenni talks to Major Pilgrim about her work and her award.
