Were women more equal under Communism?
The Czech Republic joined the European Union in May 2004 and has assumed the presidency this year. But despite the raft of anti-discrimination and equality legislation it took on when joining, critics are now saying women were in some ways treated more fairly under the Communist regime. Both men and women had a legal duty to work and women were paid the same salaries as men, whereas now there is a significant pay gap.听Jane discusses gender equality with the journalist Jana Ciglerova, and Petr Pavlik, Professor of Gender Studies at Charles University in Prague.
