Professions - Listeners' Emails

We've had lots of emails about the professions we left out of the list: here's a selection. If you would like to point out a glaring omission contact us at today@bbc.co.uk
Where are the engineers? I could only find Mechanical Engineer and Marine
Engineer. What about Aeronautical, electrical, software...? In any case,
if we are talking professions then there should be a single category
"Engineer" to cover all engineering professionals.

You have included soldiers in the professions list and you have
included Army/Navy/Airforce Officers.
What about seamen - that is ratings in the Royal Navy and all seamen
(whether officers or not) in the Merchant Navy. I don't understand
how you could have omitted this group.
Also, where are the Offshore workers - roughnecks, oilmen, divers, geologists?

How about pop singers/idols? They would have been top of my least respected list!

You have left out the dreaded human resources managers ( I hate that term,
what is wrong with calling them personnel managers). Hospital managers (so
many created during the Tory years) who delight in inventing things to
manage to justify their existence, should also be there as Today refers to
NHS every day!! I also think that those designers who "re-package logos" for
millions of pounds are an expensive waste of space.

Why didn't I find Direct Sales agents on the list?

Unfortunately Independent Financial Advisors and IT Recruitment Agencies
weren't on the least respected list.
They both get a lot of money for doing very little.

Right at the bottom of my list would be stock market traders - and others who deal in money for money's sake but who are not in themselves producing anything useful.

One important profession missed from your list is that of Secretary.
I work as a secretary at a university which was highly ranked in the
recent annual Financial Times league both for teaching and research.
Behind the scenes is a band of well qualified professionals, who on a
daily basis undertake duties which carry a high level of responsibility
and ensure the smooth running of the institution - in other words the
Secretaries.

How about all the jobs that exist in the voluntary sector? Fundraiser?
Policy/campaigns? Helpline worker? Support or advice worker? These
professions aren't listed at all!

I believe we have a distorted value system..
Those whose only concern is the penny on the bottom line,and who will do
anything to get it,are,for reasons which escape me,given ludicrous rewards
for effectively ruining many peoples lives..
Whilst those who preserve,protect and enhance life are left struggling for
resources and recognition..
We need to rethink priorities.
Accountancy used to be a tool of management,now its a God..
No wonder we're failing at almost everything.
I know its an old clich茅,but true nevertheless..Our leaders know the Price
of everything and the Value of nothing..

Where were the real heroes in your respected professions list? - the
life-boatmen or air sea rescue operators, or the volunteers who fetch
climbers who fall off mountains? In today's world getting paid shouldn't
be the only test for being 'professional' - and with individuals such
as those my respect for them verges on awe.
