"Nature is full of surprises, so the programme can investigate fascinating and challenging areas in
our relations with the natural world without being too technical or preachy. My job is brilliant because, as a link between the listener and the subject, I can discover new information and ideas which help people make up their own minds on important issues."

Soil bacteria听 漏 Andy Whiteley CEH Oxford |
The answer lies in the soil
Paul Evans turns his back on the biodiversity above ground, to investigate the world of the soil, where the variety of life reaches truly astronomic proportions. As one scientist explains this is the poor man鈥檚 rainforest and it鈥檚 on our own doorstep.
With an estimated 10,000 species of microbe within a gramme of soil and more awaiting discovery, the functions performed by this unbelievably complex web of life are complex too鈥t鈥檚 the engine-room of the planet. Fungal webs assist most of our plants to survive, and bacteria break down and recycle the components of life, such as carbon and phosphates.
But as fast as we understand the world of soil, we鈥檙e losing its biodiversity, its ability to store carbon , and the soil itself. Paul explores the threats to soil and the life that depends on it . You鈥檒l never see the ground beneath your feet in the same way again!
