"Nature offers a unique window on the natural world. It's an opportunity to hear from experts in the field, to listen to the latest debates about natural history听 and above all to share in encounters with wildlife. The sheer variety of subjects from Arctic wolves, ferns and fungi to badger culling, moths and and eagle owls means that whatever your interest in natural history, there's always something fascinating to learn and marvel over"

A Wild Boar |
Wild Escapees
This spring, after an absence of at least 300 years, hundreds of wild boar will be breeding in southern woodlands听having escaped from boar farms.
Meanwhile, in the north-east, birdwatchers will be listening out for the tell-tale hoot of the world's largest owl - the eagle owl - which has escaped from private collections.
But controversy surrounds what we should do with these wild escapees. The boar is an agricultural pest and can spread disease to farm animals.
The eagle owl might prey on species that conservationists have worked hard to protect and there's heated debate over whether the bird was ever native听in Britain in the first place.
So how should we treat these animals that have sneaked into the British landscape through the back door?
Brett Westwood听discusses this with听Jim Knight, the Minister for Biodiversity,听Julian Hughes听from the RSPB and Roy Dennis - ecologist and advocate of the benefits of having big wild animals back in Britain. |
